Did the WW2 era Carcanos ever have blued bolts or are these a post war change?

- Thanks! Mike

Blued bolts on M41s and M91s are often present in a Century Arms import batch from I believe the early 1980s. They were very roughly refurbished in Egypt, and those mismatched rifles have cosmolene-soaked stocks, often parts broken or missing, and a heavy black blue over traces or rust and pitting. Trigger groups and bolts were blued too, which differentiates this bacth from a later one which was also refurbished, but apparently in Italy, and not reblued. Probably they came from some rusty pile of leftover from the N. African campaign.

Blued bolts and their origin(s)

Blued bolts are found not infrequently. It is a general opinion (shared by me) that these are post-war refurbishments outside Italy. Egypt has been alleged various times, though I cannot pinpoint why and by whom this country was named for the first time. Libya might also be possible, if they ever sold their stocks.

PS: It appears very likely that the captured Carcanos that are still held in Russian and/or Ukrainian storage might also have reblued bolts. So far, none of these have been sold.

I have probably a half a dozen blued bolts here in the US. Including one for the 8mm conversion, and one with the original type extractor. They are around. Before Ebay had their tantrum, you could usually find about 1/3 of the bolts there blued. It is NOT that uncommon. I have no idea when it happened, or where. But they are out there in decent numbers.

Ok, now I have seen a blued bolt.

Sounds like a deal, expect a refurb, or at least refinished rifle; a 6.5 should not have the stock bolts.

To throw a little more fuel on the blued bolt fire, this is a Carcano M38 in 7.35 that I used to own. I've looked through my records, but no indication of whether the bolt matched the rifle or not. However, this is the only M38 in 7.35 that I have seen with a bent bolt, which leads me to believe that it got swapped out sometime ago. (Of course, I could be wrong )
