I have been collecting Mosin/Nagant Carbines and there copies for over 25+ years and have always thought that the Type 53 Chinese was manufactured by the same arsenal (296) and change over to /26\ arsenal markings in late 1954. Well I think this is incorrect, as there is a Type 53 arsenal (296) for sale on Gunbroker #81778021 that was mfg. in 1955.3 which means that the arsenal /26\ rifles that were mfg. in 1954-56 was being mfg. at some time but at another arsenal from the different markings that appear on these rifles. I would like any input on this question from the form. I know at one time there was questioner on mfg. information on this Form for the Type 53 Chinese carbine.
Thanks,
Tex & Type 63SKS

I wonder if it's not actually a 1953.3. The picture is pretty bad and although it's in the description as 1955.3, the owner may have misread it. The "3" and "5" are very similar and it doesn't take much damage to make one look like the other. It happens pretty frequently with Soviet M91/30s. To see what I'm talking about look at the first barrel marking here: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinM44EEC.htm

Bob, is that you? Any word on the books? I called a while back but you were laying brick or something.

Yep, its me
and the books have finially been shipped, hope they are here in the next week. I will call you as soon as they show there little heads. I look at the picture and it is 1955 dated as the month is a number 3, maybe to much Sakie the night before with the boys. Very interesting, anybody else have a Arsenal (296) dated in 1955 ?

ryg is the guy that's collecting data on these. I saved a copy of the thread from the Survey Forum and would like to get in touch with him about reposting a summary of the data he has at this point. He could probably tell you if this one extends the production of "296" or if it overlaps with "26". If anybody can get in touch with him please have him contact me about the Survey Forum. TIA

Dates for Arsenal Code 296 T53's were reported from 1953.6 to 1955.3. Lapin mentioned in his book that production began in May 1953, so there may be a few (very few?) 1953.5 dated examples someplace.

Judging from the serial numbers and dates, they started making only a couple thousand a month, steadily increasing until it was about 35,000 or so per month by 1955. So, we can estimate there were about 100,000 Arsenal Code 296 T53's made from January to March 1955. If we figure that Arsenal Code 26 was used for the other 9 months of 1955, it also came out to about 35,000 per month based on the highest serial number, which was about 3,320,000 (for Arsenal Code 26, the 3,000,000th digit indicated the 3rd year of this type - i.e., 1955, so 320,000 was the actual consecutive number in the series). Unfortunately, I do not have access to my list at this time, so I have to rely on memory (warning light goes on at this!!).

ryg, I have saved the thread from the old Survey Forum to my hard drive if you need a copy of it. I'd like for you to repost a summary of the information you have collected so far to get the thread restarted rather than just copy everything over. As you know it was a long thread and could have used some "cleaning up" anyway. Please e-mail or PM me if there's anything I can do to help. TIA

I have 3 T53's, and one of them is a 1955.3 arsenal 296...unfortunately it is the roughest one of the 3 I have. AT least the bore is in good shape!

I got them from Omega...

Nice. My 296s are both marked 1954; only the 26 is marked 1955.

I bought a type 53 from Buds last week that is in very good condition. It is stamped 296, 1953.9 and s/n A13487 (chinese character for test). All numbers match and there are number 28 marks on the bolt, trigger guard, receiver and butt plate. I will post some pics asap. Here are some pics as promised.
