I am putting a new barrel on my Ruger 10-22. The Butler Creek barrel I now have needs retiring.
I have seen barrels offered in 1 in 9, 1 in 14" and 1 in 16".
Keeping in mind that I will be using subsonic (1049 fps mv) 38 gr. bullets, which is the accurate twist?
Thanks

You might try asking the guys at rimfirecentral.com. They have a forum just for modified 10/22's.

I think the 1:16 will be fine with subs ,I have a Green Mtn. 22" fluted sporter wt. with a 1:16 on mine and it is scary accurate with rem subs and any other subsonic target/match ammo.

Unless you're shooting Aquila "Sniper" subsonics, 1:16 should be fine. It's the added length of the SSS projectile that requires a faster twist rate. The Tula TOZ-78 has something like a 1:14, or maybe 1:12 twist and they will stabilize the Aguila SSS rounds.

I left it in a single gun rifle rack by a door to my bathroom. I suppose moisture collected in the barrel and corroded about 10" of rifling. Surprising to me that it didn't start until about 4 inches down the barrel. It was a butler creek barrel. I don't know any bad talk about the company so I'll write it off as poor maintenance on my part.

I've put a Green Mountain barrel on. 1 in 16" twist. I haven't zeroed it yet, but you can bet there's a good coat of oil in this one from now on!
