Greetings,

What would be a fair price for an original GEW 98 with the Lange sight?
I'm looking for a good shooter, so am not concerned about all matching numbers.

TIA

"Mostly matching" ones in excellent condition that have an original appearance seem to start at about $700. Lesser condition, total mixmasters in mechanically good condition could start at $200. to $300. Occasionally one sees a very nice Cz M98/22 rifle equipped with the Lange rear sight for about $175. to $275. That is virtually the same rifle and would possibly be in better overall condition for the same money that you would pay for a low-end GEW 98. Buy the best bore you can find. DDR

I made the mistake of buying this Amberg Gewehr 98. Rear sight matched the barrel and receiver. Front and rear bands matched each other. Bolt was a replacement. Rear swivel was a crude replacement. Cleaning rod SN did not match receiver. Stock is solid with tiger stripes.

Hello all. I recently bought a Gewer 98 Oberndorf 1916 for $570. It was my second C+R purchase! It's almost all matching except for one or two parts.

I Have To Tell You Gents I'm Bothered By How Far This Went When It Was A Flagerent Violation Of The Rules!

Yo Gents,

The problem was with sn1945 and while it would have been much faster to simply delete the entire thread, which certainly would have taken less of my valuable time, but that wouldn't have been fair to Merle who started a legitimate thread!

I also have a hard time believing that so many of you are as naive as you appeared to be in this thread as it wandered off course?

What better way to whip up frenzy to help sell an historic piece than to suggest on an Firearms Collector's Forum that you are going to "CHOP" a rifle that you have been having trouble selling? This comment of course brought all you greedy "saviors" out of the woodwork and NOT ONE OF YOU suggested that the rules were being broken!

sn1945 might have just as well suggested that he was going to "sporterize" it! If you aren't capable of seeing through that approach, I have a bridge or two for sale that I want to post on the Trader since WTS adds are a flagrant rules violation on the Forum!

You guys swallowed the hook so deep on this one that it must have come out your %$@!

All of those who participated in the sn1945 "fire sale" should apologize to Merle who was simply looking for a price range estimate for a Gew 98!

Respectfully submitted,

JPS

Yo sn1945,

Please consider yourself warned! I was going to send you a quiet back channel email and was NOT going to red or yellow card you, until I discovered that you do not receive email! Why am I not surprised?

This is going to be posted on the Moderators Forum and your threads will be checked daily for a while to see if this behavior is the norm with you or was simply a one off accidental flagrant rules violation. Based on the manner that it was done, I have my own opinion as to your motivation.

This could have been handled quietly and left at that. I didn't card you last night, but will do so today since I can't contact you via email.

Hello Merle,

My sincerest apologies that this turned into a three ring circus! Regarding your original question, the current price ranges based my own experience are as follows;

Shooter grade,

Generally mismatched and Turked, but otherwise in original configuration - $150 to $250, depending to a great degree on where in the country you live and of course the condition of the rifle and bore.

Low Collector Grade

Generally matching or matching except for the bolt, with variation in price based on overall condition - $200 - $400

Medium Collector Grade

Matching, except for a minor part or two, price varying mostly based on condition, many folks would place depot renumbered forced matches in this category - $350 - $500

High End Collector Grade

Completely matching in marginal condition, to completely matching in very good plus condition, a piece generally to be drooled over and including some lesser rifles with desirable arsenal or arsenal/year combination - $600 - $1200

There is always some overlap based on overall condition along with some proverbial exceptions, however real top dollar collector grade weapons jump up substantially from the Medium grade rating.

Hope this helps! Sorry again about your thread being hijacked as an attempted WTS advertisement!

Warmest regards,

JPS

JPS - I think you should just deleate the bulk of this thread and just keep Merle's original question and your reply.

Hi Bob,

Hope you are well my friend. I understand where you are coming from, but think it best to leave it as is for a least a day or two so that everyone who sat back and watched the train wreck in progress can recognize the part that they played in the subsiquent feeding frenzy!

If Merle feels otherwise, I would be happy to delete the entire thread and let Merle start over.

Warmest regards,

JPS

Sorry Merle, I shouldn't have gone off your original focus when you mentioned what you were considering as options.

I'm not nieve, just stupid. I thought the conversation naturalyy was going in a direction of pluses/minuses for this action or that so I made the comments I did.

I guess I'll just stay out of that area unless I'm in the WTSWTT page.

My apologies.

Sorry, gents. In my haste to prevent a Gew98 from going to the chopping block, I broke the rules.

Me too. My apologies. I got so into "save the rifle" mode that I didn't even notice I got suckered into such an obvious trap. I shall endeavor to avoid such pit falls in the future.

Sorry everybody.

Yo Gents,

Thank you one and all for taking the time to comment. I appreciate the fact that it can be very difficult not to respond when you have obviously been "baited", which was the exact intent of the comment that a piece of Imperial German history was going to be "chopped".

I also understand that it is very tempting to grab an opportunity like that and run with it, particularly when you were not the person who violated the rules. No need to lose any sleep over this thread.

As for the original rules violation, my report of this incident on the Moderator's Forum has turned up the fact that sn1945 has been a repeat offender when it comes to abusing the Forums with thinly veiled WTS efforts tucked into the middle of informational threads. This has been duly noted by the powers that be.

That sn1945 knew exactly what he was doing and that he was intentionally violating the rules is made even more obvious by the fact that he has not made any further comments within this thread, or on a back channel basis via email. While he does not have an email address listed where he can be contacted, I most certainly do.

In addition, I greatly appreciate some of the email that has been sent to me by folks who participated in this thread. We are extremely lucky to have a very large number quality members who grace these Forums with their presence. This is a direct reflection on both Tuco and Vic and the professional manner in which these Boards are run.

Please feel free to chime in if you have any additional pricing info for Merle! I gave it my best shot, but I know that there are folks out there who have newer or better pricing info than I do!

Warmest regards,

JPS
