Sarge! I saw a thing on one of the TV channels that talked about the "ping" of the Garand getting folks killed. Can't remember what show it was, tho...

Ah, Good to hear from ya, Sarge! I do hope that your ticker's g2g! I have discovered hog hunting, and have been walking right past the Bambis! I have gotten into the AR's, again, due to my neck and deminished left arm. They sure are alot easier to carry when in the "thickies" where the hawgs live. Good on ya for fixin' that PSO. They can be a handful for weakening, half century-old eyes. hehe Lotsa small pieces parts!

Sorry I havent returned your message for so long. Moved to NY then have been in the hospital for awhile. Feel like I have been paroled, missed the boards! The ticker wasnt working so well. Used my PSL to deer hunt, didnt even see one to shoot. Took the PSO I have apart and fixed the inner mechanism, it fixed the slanted reticle and shoots like a champ! Hope your deer hunting went better!

Yup, he also got my m94 Winchester, my .22's and my shotguns, as well as my adopted brother's guns. But I got all of those back. He swiped them all while I was away in the Army. Oh well, family will crack ya harder than anyone else, in some cases.

Wow! That sucks. When I joined the Army all my guns I had grew legs and walked away. Nobody saw or heard anything. Pretty sure it was my stepbrothers.

I hear ya. I inherited a P08 Luger from my Step Grandfather, but my uncle stole it while was away in he army. He never had any interest in it til he heard what they were worth. He sold it, I am told.

Asked my grandfather about what he carried in WWII. He carried a greasegun and a .45. He told me he had a luger for awhile that he got of a dead German Officer.

I have heard that mentioned every single time the Garand or "32 rifle" was ever talked about. Go figure? I would imagine that your Grandfather had either a 1911a1 or an M3 Greasegun, since he was a Tanker. Garands don't really fit tanks. I can specifically relate T-Sgt Martin Thompson of the Rainbow Division. He told me that he had 6 Germans tied down. When they heard the zing, they all stood up and fired at him. He was hit in the forehead and lost a portion of his right frontal lobe. He always blamed that zing. He said that they loved that "32 rifle", but it would get you killed, if you weren't "particular, about reloading." He told me that they would "cover each other" so that they never "ran out at the same time." I dunno, I wasn't there. I have to accept what the old-timers told me about it. It still beats the hell out of a 98k.

I will ask my Grandfather about that when I see him. Dont know how much he may know or if he had that happen to him, he spent the whole war in Tanks.

No never came up in conversation, even at an 82nd Division Asscociation Convention. The vets I talked to were more interested in talking about the latest crap we had. I had one guy with 4 jumps Normandy, Salerno, Holland you get the idea. He was more interested because I had 30 at the time. We had some WWII vets here this last year for the 101st Week of the Eagles. They all of the have some really great stories, but I never heard that before.

Haha, really? Have you ever met a WW2 vet? I have heard that zing talked about so much by them, I'm shocked. TOTALLY! You can hear it from 200 yards away during an artillery barrage! ZIIIING! Total tactical deception destroyer! That high-pitched sound really carries a long way.

I went throught the 6th ID Sniper School, when thee was a 6th ID. They showed us that method of using shoting that way too. Never tried it, buddy of mine just got back from deployment so when we hit the range I will give it a go.

Never heard of or thought of the zing causing that. I heard the cricket they used to identify each other during the night drops in Normandy had the same sound as the German bolt actions causing confusion and the same issue.

I hear ya. I've had Thompson's, an SVD, all kinds of stuff, over the years. I'm 6-4 and 220-ish, with LONG arms, so I am seriously thinking about that stock set. I shoot right-handed with my left eye because of the shortness. During Ranger School, they showed us a pic of a Soviet Sniper shooting that way, so I tried it, and it works for me. That Zing caused alot of Americans to be shot. The Germans and Japanese realized, ZING meant an empty rifle. I knew a WW2 Vet who was wounded when he zinged.

I dont know why but the ting the Garande makes after the last shot is fired just makes me want one. We had XM-177's back when I was a private in the LRRS Company. Havent seen any since. We have an SVD confiscated from IRAQ however its been demilled. We had a Thompson but it was stolen about a year ago right out of the display case in broad daylight.

The modded stock set for the PSL is worth it. I am pretty big guy with a long reach so I can adjust it out, my son can adjust it in so he can shoot it. My Dad is a really big guy and adjusts it all the way out. 20 years in the Army has made it where I really get used to the synthetic stocks. Even our M14's have synthetic stocks on them.

I used to collect Carbines, even had an M3, at one point. As for the Garand, never owned one, they've been too expensive for the weight in my opinion. Funny thing, I was stationed on Capitol Hill for 16 months. The CMP (originally the DCM) was the 1st floor of my building. The girls would tell me that they had a great shipment ready to go, and I never got one. Huh...$165 back then, if I remember correctly. I was too busy rippin' around DC on my lil Sportster, haha. Oh well... Been thinking about that SVD-modded stock set, but haven't taken the plunge. I was issued an XM-177 way back when in SA. I don't really miss it, but... ;)

No me either; I would have never put a bayonet on my M4 in combat at all! Didnt even take one on my last deployment. I am just going for the complete kit. I put black synthetic furniture on this PSL, just trying to match color with the bayonet. I am thinking of building a PSL and going with the wood furniture like it comes with.

Was just fiddling with a M1 last night while on duty. I would love to find one of those in grat shape! We have a M1, M1 Carbine, MP40, SKS, and an RPK at the unit on display. So I get to field strip them and clean them while pulling Staff Duty. I like the nestalgic look and history behind them!

I "assume" that the Romanian would be proper, as it is a Romanian rifle, however, I don't see anyone actually "using" a bayonet on a PSL. Come on, that thin barrel? Adding weight to it? Forget about using it as a pike, you're going to kill ANY chance for it to shoot straight. It becomes a weak, short spear. Look at the Garand, a robust, tough weapon. A bayonet makes it shoot very unpredictably. What's gonna happen with the noodle barrel on a PSL? I understand wanting to have the "entire kit" for a weapon, I like to do the same. In the case of the PSL? I am happy that the bayo lug is ground off of mine. It doesn't tempt me a bit, that way.

I have another PSL question to ask you, as I have come to read on the forums you know alot and you know more than most Ive seen. What bayonets fit on the PSL. I dont like the Romanian one's. I was looking at a Bulgarian AKM/AK 74 bayonet one of the black ones however I cant find anything on line as to what will actually fit. Any help would be great!

You were also right on with the ammo! The cheaper surplus did just as good, thanks for that money saver!

Actually, I wouldn't know. I graduated from the Army Armorer's course, but, the rest of it, I picked-up over the years. Like motorcycles, I had been "doing" mechanic work about 30 years before I saw any of the service schools.
