Not marking a few "test bed" rifles is reasonable. However I am referring to trial of 1,055 rifles throughout 1902 which resulted in the introduction of the SMLE MkI. It appears previous Trials...

Having to look up Skennerton in relation to a posting on another forum I noted something I found curious in relation to the SMLE trials rifles of 1902.
They were made without any manufacturers,...
Ooops, yes it does.

That's an eight not a three, so really doesn't add much to the discussion.

Some great photos there.
However I can't help but wonder how many are correctly labelled. Having, in my formative years, read anything I could on our Diggers exploits in various wars I had seen many...
I'd have a crack at that, but if your using NSW I'll go Victoria.

Gallipoli, the turkish story - Kevin Fewster, Vecihi Basarm, Hatice Basarm - ISBN 1 74114 045 5.
About 180 pages. Gives the Turkish side. Interesting read.
The A suffix is out of sequence for a '44 Lithgow.
Actually looking at it again - the V over the serial number on the barrel, and the Brit rather than Lithgow proofs on the barrel and the differing...
A truly remarkable woman. I had the honour of meeting her once through work in the late nineties, not long before she moved to the UK. Very fiery even at 80+. What I couldn't understand was the...
My No 2 MkIV* has always fired first time every time, but had the same sort of issues with my No 8 when I first bought it. Firing pin was hitting inside the rim like yours. My gunsmith made a new...
Mine is not numbered although it is a recycled rather than a new bolt as it still retains the batching number under the bolt handle.
Yes it does, hence my earlier reference to Skennerton - "Although TLE mentions NSW police issue". However this appears to be the only reference and there are no examples of markings. In TBA (The...
Mike, are they all MkI***'s ?
I have been told the same but have yet to see a definitive source for that information. Although TLE mentions NSW police issue, neither TLE or TBA provide examples of markings.
Also when were they...
Nice rifle. I think they are more elegant than the MkIII.
Do you have any idea of the meaning of the number on the butt ?
Oh, and I don't think the safety is original if marked with a...
Came across this on a recent holiday in Tasmania. Apparently done for a competition (it placed equal first).
Nice to see the younger generation acknowledge the older and have a sense of humour....
I think it was an airshow at Temora and I've a vague recollection JGS posted the photos - could be wrong though.
Nope got it wrong, it was Lithy but JGS was involved so I'm not completely mad
jrhead,
I wasn't specifically disagreeing with your comment. My first point was more directed to the fact that we haven't seen all around the barrel in the photos or been able to inspect it...
I'm not totally convinced.
Firstly without inspecting all around the barrel I don't think you can say conclusively there are no George V proof marks.
Secondly it is not as if the timeframe is...
The ER stamps appear to be proof stamps. A rifle being proofed twice in its lifetime doesn't sound impossible. Perhaps it was proofed after conversion to Grenade Firing sometime after 1936 ?
OK, wasn't that excited about it. Just thought I might pick it up to have one. After the comments & a quick scan of Skennerton I think I'll pass.
Wagga will send a PM
Had an acquaintance ask me to look at his "Long Lee" that he wanted to sell. He is thinking of culling to fund a new purchase. A mutual friend had recently sold his for four figures and the...
I don't know if it will be of any use to you but I have a PDF document of a War Office Handbook for the No8 published in 1961. Does show how to completely strip the bolt including extractor. Could...
I think your definition is fine for current usage but going back in time it becomes to narrow and "modern".
Rifles were used for sniping prior to scopes becoming issued equipment. Are these not...
Well bugger me !! I've lived in Port Macquarie 16 years, been to Town beach hundreds of times and never knew that the compass stand was there.
