Dear All - at this moment there is a clip going the rounds showing an ATGM being fired at an oncoming tank, the hit and the tank bursting into violent flames.

Here is the text - and here is the clip that I first saw in 1987 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ARjuTKdiIk

'What you are about to watch is an actual event. Our forces filmed
this in actual time. What you are about to see is a fully armored
Syrian tank being hit by an Israeli laser-guided, steel-penetrating,
phosphorous-filled "hand held" rocket. The rocket is small, very
portable and is a tightly controlled weapon, each one is accounted for
when they are checked out and back in. There must be no fewer than
2 soldiers present to verify the use, one must be a senior officer with a
minimum of 10 years military service. (Sorry, the name and program is
kept secret.)
This tank was headed for one of Israel 's settlements, there were four
more tanks one mile to the rear of this tank. (They turned around
before getting to this area.)

You can hear the ammunition going off after the initial strike. No tank
member survived this event. this event did not make the news, it is an
everyday event for our forces and we do not "embed" news sources with
our armed forces like the Americans do. This is for our survival, not for
"news" entertainment!'

I'm here to tell you that this report is total CRAP.

1. The missile is the Swedish Bofors RBS-56 BOFORS BILL - the first 'top-attack' SACLOS ATGM in the world.

2. The date is around 1986 and the location is the BOFORS AB live-firing test range in Sweden - you can hear the Swedish WOC if you listen hard.

3. The target tank is a retired Centurion and is it radio-controlled.

4. It has doctored munitions to give an impressive result.

5. The clip can be seen on the video 'World Missiles and Missile Systems'.

Please read up on BOFORS BILL on google or Youtube.

Thank you.

Oh great. Now we have humped videos to go with humped Mausers, Enfield Ts and Mosin snipers.:barf: Can anybody on planet Earth even spell "integrity" any more?

phosphorous-filled ? - Do any ATGM warhead have phosphorus?

My BS meter went to full red with this part.

They may not be able to spell "integrity" but they sure have a PhD in BULLSHIT!

No ATGM warheads use a phosphorus filling to my knowledge. If you want to light up a tank, punch a hole in it with something that will fling hot bits around inside. DU is good for this.

Oh - AFAIK, all military forces that have ATGMs control them pretty tightly - the curst things are expensive and nobody wants them to be wasted, or go walkabout, but needing a senior aofficer on hand to witness use is clearly utter BS...

To get to an Israeli settlement next to a nice lush body of water from Syria one would have a very long trip through Lebanon.

Anyway, what caught my attention was in the second clip. There is nothing to compare the size of the tank to except the "waves" of the "lake". To be honest the tank looks like an RC model in the second scene loaded with something flammable to impress the camera. It's just going too fast, looks too light and not tearing up the sod and there are no humans to be seen or anything else to scale it to, not to mention it was shot from a pan head tripod, and who sets those up in the middle of a firefight?

This is total BS.

The missile is the Swedish Bofors BILL RBS-56.

The place is the Bofors test range in Sweden.

The date is late 1986.

The tank is a radio-controlled de-miled Centurion tank, one of the couple of hundred that Sweden had in service for many years.

The missile crew are Swedish.

FFS, does it actually LOOK like any part of the Israel/Syrian border?

The movie is part of a video called 'World missile systems' - one that I used to use in teaching missiles at the intel school back in the '80's.

Please look on Youtube/Google for Bofors Bill and RBS-56 - the world's first top attack, SACLOS ATGM.

Thank you for reading.
