I just got a 1944 M44 carbine and there is an MB before the serial number, does this have any meaning

Just part of the serial number. Nothing unusual.

They went to an Alpha-Numeric S/N system in 1937 or 1938. They are two letters from the Cryllic alphabet. Denny

Thanks for the info, the receiver has the MB and the serial #, the buttplate, bolt and magazine cover are marked with the serial number with no MB
