Hello all, I recently put on layaway a Syrian contract MAS 49. I have read that there was only 6,000 rifles made for the Syrians, is this true? Which MAS 49 is more uncommon, the Syrian or the French? The rifle I purchased is very nice overall. The gray parkerizing is in the 90% to 95% range. The bore is bright and shiny with no pitting but unfortunately, is counterbored. The wood looks like it has had many dings and dents through the years but has been sanded at some point, maybe the same time it was counterbored. The serial numbers on the buttstock and forestock are still very sharp and the 1953 roundel cartouche on the buttstock is still readable as well! However, the grasping grooves are barely there. The rifle has matching serial numbers on the receiver, triggerguard, buttstock and forstock. The only non-matching number I can see on the whole piece is the bayonet. Is the bolt and carrier numbered on the inside where it can't be seen without disassembly? I wasn't really in the market for one of these but the price of $275 was just to good to pass up! I used to have a 49/56 years ago but sold it awhile back. The problem I always had with that particular rifle was that it would go full auto on me. Occasionally, with no rhyme or reason, it would do a two round burst. Is this common with these rifles and is there anything that can be done about it? Lastly, I know these rifles weren't imported in the last few years, but it doesn't seem like Syria is a country we've been on friendly terms with anytime recently. Does anyone know if these rifles were imported directly from Syria or from another country? Thanks everyone for any and all info and help that is provided!

Although there were fewer of the Syrian variant produced, they are equally, if not more, plentiful in the USA than the French variant. Your rifle was counterbored when it left the factory and the grasping grooves are very shallow, so your rifle is probably in facrory finish. The bolt and carrier are numbered on the inside. Mine are mismatched, but everything else matches like yours does. $275 is a steal for one of these, so you did well to grab it. These are suseptible to slam firing, the same as the 49/56. There are three approaches to addressing this: adding a spring to the firing pin, flattening the tip of the firing pin, or obtaining a lightened firing pin. Search on this forum and you'll find lots of info.

Thank you for the info. Just wondering, why in the world would they counterbore the muzzle at the factory? And the shallow grasping grooves are factory too? There is one last question I forgot to ask earlier. I noticed the the F prefix of the serial number on the receiver, triggerguard and buttstock is a block letter F and the s/n prefix on the forestock is a cursive letter F. Is this normal? Thanks again!!

These guns were delivered in 1953/54, just as the Factory and the French Ordnance were converting to Roman Letters, replacing the Cursive Italic Script. All of the original, un-messed with Syrian Rifles I have ever examined were in the 30,000 series and all were typical of that era.

The grooves are narrow in those days, even the French Mle 49 Rifles are like that. In the 60's, when they rebuilt the French Issue Rifles, they used Beechwood to replace Walnut, and the groove is wider and deeper than in 1953.

All of the Mle 49 and Mle 36 Rifles made after Jan 1950, have a counterbore at the muzzle, with white metal showing on mintier examples. This was done to reduce damage at the muzzle by cleaning rods and pull thrus. I have a Mle 1936 made in 1949, un-altered, which is not counterbored, a similar gun, made in 1950 is. The official explanation is that the use of the rigid rod, to clean from the muzzle, was required with the semi auto rifles, unlike the Mle 36 that was easily cleaned from the breech, and since the chief cause or barrel replacement was found to be muzzle wear and this was attributed to over-zealous cleaning...I do not know if this is the case or not, just that this is the reason I was given for the C/B in the 50's..

The receiver cover is stamped inside, by the buffer, and they used an Italic F, later they stamped the rear of the cover, and used Roman Letters. If the receiver cover is cut flat, at a 45 deg angle, it is an Arsenal restamp, if it is round, then it is the original configuration. There are many little details noticed by the collectors on this board that apply to the Mle 49, such as the location and style of serie Number and other little things....(The Nylon bushings on the hammer, etc...)

Almost all of the Mle 49 Syrian guns were imported by Century Arms and they were well used by the Syrians. Some were imported from Canada, and they were in similar condition to yours.

Only 265 or so of the FRENCH Mle 49's were sold by AIM in Ohio in the 90's. Several thousand if not most of the Syrian Contract Guns were imported into the US, at various times. The Mle 44 Rifles were all in one batch, brought in by Century in the 1980's, supposedly they brought in 3000 of the 6000 made.....

The counterboring of the barrel end was carried out at the factory during the barrel machining process on all French rifles designed for launching of the model 1948 grenades.

Slam fire, or more accurately "uncontrolled firing" is not a curse.

A Mas 49 or 49-56 rifle properly maintained should never slam fire, I have no memory of a rifle slam firing while I was in the Army in the Sixties, the 49-56 was the main battle rifle then, even the 49.56 dedicated to grenade launching didn't get rattled enough by it to go slam firing.

Slam fire is not the proper term, as the bolt is already locked when the firing pin is allowed to move ahead or to be striken by the hammer, beside firing on its own the rifle is safe and there are no risks of the cartridge to go off before it is fully chambered and the bolt locked, uinlike other semi autos that may litterally explode.

The possible causes of slam fire are:
- soft primers, usually on a correctly maintained rifle, the use of CCI 34 primers should be sufficient to prevent it.
- bad vertical adjustment of the trigger block, the hammer protrusion inside the receiver should be adjusted between 0.8mm and 1.0mm above the floor of the receiver, the hammer being held back on the auto sear, and not on the trigger sear.
- excessive wear of the hammer, auto sear, trigger sear.
- excessive length of the firing pin, pin protrusion in the bolt face should not exceed 0.8mm.
- incorrect assembly of bolt and firing pin, both should be of the correct type, marked with a "O" on the side.
- loose stock and/or loose trigger block.

Thanks guys for all the great responses! Now that everyone mentions the counterbore, I checked on my MAS 36/51 and it appears to be counterbored as well. Atleast the rifling doesn't go all the way to the muzzle. Its in the F 95,000 range. Is there anyway to determine the date of manufacture of this rifle? Someone mentioned one way to help curb the "slam fire" issue in the 49 series of rifles was to install a spring on the firing pin. What type of spring should I use? Has anyone here tried it and did it work? Lastly, I have a box of the Prvi Partizan 7.5 French, can anyone attest to how it shoots? Guess now I'm going to have to pick up a few more boxes at the next gunshow! Thanks again for all the help guys, it is greatly appreciated!

To determine the date of manufacture, post the Series number and prefix, or refer to the stick posts above that have the serial data on the French Rifles..

A Mle 36-51 F 90,000 would be approxomately 1954/55. By this time, all of the Mle 36 rifles made, used the same, "one size fits all" barrel, with the hole in front of the front sight that allows installation on a Mle 36 or a Mle 36-51.

I have seen several of the 36-51 Rifles in minty condition lately, they had tags stating that they were in "New" condition, unlike the usually "once rebuilt-like new" models that one sees at gun shows.

Thanks vonmazur for the date info on my 36/51. The faint remnants of the roundel cartouche are there on the stock, but it is not readable. Well, this past Saturday I picked up my Syrian contract MAS 49 and can now offer more details! Serial number is F39251 and is matching on the receiver, triggerguard, forestock and buttstock. Mismatched numbers are on the bayonet, receiver cover, bolt and bolt carrier. However, all the mismatched numbers are in the proper Syrian serial range. A block letter F is used on the receiver, buttstock and bolt (electropenciled) and cursive f is on the forestock, triggerguard and receiver cover. The roundel cartouche on the buttstock is still readable and is marked with the date Juille 1953. I'm judgeing by the serial number that this particular rifle was made at the very end of the Syrian contract? It also seems from what I've read on this forum and seen on the auctions sights recently that it is just about impossible to find a MAS 49 with all matching numbers? Are there any other details I should look at more closely on this rifle that will give me any additional info on it? Its a fairly neat rifle and am glad I added it to my collection. I'm interested to try it out at the range one day. I must admit, buying this MAS 49 has given me the hankering for reacquiring a 49/56 for the collection as well. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me out!

I don't really think you could go too far wrong for $275.00. Those a really pretty looking rifles. They aren't making any more of them either.

When Century had the MAS 44s We saw three different finished weapons here.
Grey Park
Black Paint
Black Park......the black parkerized guns were the least common. Anyone else seen one of these???

I think the black looking park was "Stoving" a black carbon applied to the park to darken it, sometimes the varnish was worn off, so the park looked black. I have had one in the 80's......

Varnish worn off?? I have a Mint 44...nothing "worn off" and it looks like Maganeese Phosphate (black) parkerizing to me. Could just be VERY dark grey. It just is a striking different finish when you put it next to a grey Parked 44.

I've never seen a 44 with black parkerizing. Definitely like to see it. Could you post a picture?

very intersting survey.

It would be even more intéresting to amend your data by adding the barrel manufacture date and eventual rearsenal stamps.

Will post my own when I get back home.

Per your request on the other board. I bought this around 10 years ago - I have no idea what constitutes the difference between a Syrian and a French rifle. Appears painted black. I have no idea what the device near the front of it does - range finder for gl? - best guess - barrel attachment has #26 on it. No muzzle brake.

Rifle is marked EBF horizontally and F 77530 vertically. Rear of receiver marked on left in circle "MM" on right "D". Buttstock is mismatch number - F 37499. Scope is marked APX L806 OPL No 28.503 No markings noted on mount. (Did not take it off - this rig was put together by me 10+ years ago - I found the scope/mount/carrying case first and later the rifle)

Hope this helps you.

rogerbutthead the best way to tell if it is a Syrian or French 49 is the Syrian has a bayonet and the French ones does not.BTW great rifle you got there.DMinFla

The device on the side is the aiming devise to launch grenade, moving the screw adjusts the depht of the grenade allowing to hit according to the distance that appears on the side marks.
the aiming device can take two different angles 45° and 74 ° if I remember correctly hence allowing full distance or half distance according to the selected angle.
such devices existed on M1 Garand but without depth adjustement of the rifle grenade and it was a add on device with a gas cut off.

shooting rifle grenade with a MAS was really accurate.
the device on 49/56 works with the same principle but much faster to use with its sliding depth adjustment ring and the aiming device allows for direct AT and AP/AV shooting.

Went to go talk to an acquaintance with a MAS49 to see if he would give you his info. Ended up buying the rig. I guess its Syrian, #26 on barrel attachment, F 37596 on receiver and stock - scope is APX L806 SOM No11677. He states picked up the scope/mount/booklet/eyepiece all with the case. He bought the rifle from someone else who claimed it was a VN bringback. (no paperwork of course)

The other rig I posted has a light brown leather scope/mount case.

Hope this helps.

Mas 49
# F 14970 (horizontal), barrel Mas-1953, grenade launcher, parkerized, condition new, no refurbishing stamp, stock & forend walnut.

Mas49-56
# G 21709 (vertical), barrel Mas-1971, refurbished 1971, transformed MSE 1975.
# G 50773 (vertical), barrel Mas-1966, refurbished 1970.
# H 73907 (vertical), barrel Mas-1991, (cal 7.08) no refurbishing stamp.

All three 49-56 are parkerized, and with flash hider.

logging of barrel date and refurbishing stamp can help to assess rifle past: my G21709 has a barrel dated 71 and refurb stamp 71, as G50773 has a barrel dated 66, it means that G21709 was rebarreled in 71.

MAS 49/56 with Serial # G2778 (vertical) with muzzle brake and grenade launcher. The finish is dark Park. There is a "P76" in a box next to the serial #.
What is the significance of the horizontal vs. vertical serial # and what is the # in the box?
Thanks,
GTP Super

Sometime in the early 50's, circa 1953, the MAS authorities began to stamp the number on the receiver vertically instead of horizontally. I believe that all of the 49-56 rifles were stamped vertically, unless an early 49 receiver was used to build a 49-56.

It would be very handy to update your data by adding the barrel date, to be found under the hand guard and log in as well the refurbishing stamps.

DMinFla was naughty, luring me in here from my usual haunt, the Japanese forum….

My MAS 49/56 is serial G51369 stamped vertical, has the flash hider, wide front sight base and rebuild mark “P75”. It is in un-issued condition and I have the scope for it as well, I bought that some time after I purchased the rifle. I would like to shoot it more but do not for lack of non-corrosive ammo. It fired three shot bursts (slamfires) with my handloads.

I also have a MAS36 bolt action that is a Viet-Nam bringback if anyone is interested in data from it. We often wish that our guns could actually tell us stories of where they have been, but I have always thought that this one’s stories would not be very nice.
Regards from Alaska,
Jeff

I have 3 rifles for survey.

MAS M1949, Syrian contract - SN# F37383
Grenade launcher, bayonet, stock cartouched "Juin, MA, 1953"
Externally all matching (stock, handguard, bayonet, etc), but has cover for 38954, bolt for F37181, bolt carrier for 33473.

Did they import these disassembled? Rifle is in excellent condition, and can only guess as to reason for internasl parts not matching.

MAS 49/56 - SN# G21794
Vertical SN#, type 2 flash hider

MAS 49/56 - SN# G97608
Vertical SN, type 2 flash hider
Has "P81" also on receiver - is this a rebuild marking?????

Thanks - Tom

Hey!- New to this board, but not to firearms. Presently I own one 49/56 (7.5) did own a Century .308 conversion but traded it away.

My rifle is in like new condition (rearsenaled 1992) it is very dark parked, and came with all the standard goodies, bayonet, night sight, cleaning equipment, sling, etc.

I have never had any interest in French Firearms. I bought the rifle because I knew enough about the design to know that much of what you read is false- related to Century conversions, etc. The 49/56 is the surplus auto loader deal of the decade. You cannot find anything comparable in such fine condition, and I appreciate when condition and function are both flawless- the rifle has not disappointed me in either.

The serial number is G16215 (best I can make out) It shows rearsenaled stamps for 1977 and 1992. The wood is perfect and very pleasant looking. there are no marks on the metal, and only a couple on the finish, which are very small. The slip on butt pad is marked 1962. I cleaned the gas tube very well, never had a single problem with this rifle- but I did with the Century conversion (Yes, I know).

I have cleaned it very thoroughly, to include the wood, and have shot it extensivley over the past two years. It functions wonderfully with Frontier Brass, Nosler BTip 150s over IMR 4895 (dont have my table here for gr). It's a doll to shoot, dont like the front sight but thats just how it is- and I can still hit what I'm aiming at. I had some trouble at first with soft point bullets not feeding well, hence the Btips.

I guess its just me, but so many people complain that this rifle is ugly. I rather like the looks of it to be honest.

Nice rifle Buddy, to say the least! No Century conversions needed.

A guy I run into regularly at gun shows here in Northern California claims to have a MAS 44"A". Have any of these turned up anywhere else, or any other 7.62Ns for that matter? Both must be very rare.

DM,
Here is another MAS44 for your survey:
Serial Number F5991 and it's parkerized

I would like to kick this survey to the top along with some news about the person who began it.

Dan Mayfield, known here as DMinFL died in July of a heart attack at age 43. He began the work of collecting serial numbers for MAS semi auto rifles and I feel that work ought to go on. Please keep this thread alive with your continual contributions of serial numbers. I will attempt to restart the same thread at Parallax Bill's Place.

Michael, very sorry to hear about Dan, my sympathies to his family. Heart problems seem to be prevalent around me lately.
I bought this about five years ago. The local pawn was nice enough to order from SOG for me. I have kept it in the box and all accessories are still as packed. I always felt it was too ugly to take anywhere. So I've never fired it. The bolt and all parts look as new to me. I tried to find an arsenal mark for rebuild status, but don't see anything other than the AR with an S under it on the front left of the receiver, just visible in the pics. Serial H 30537

hi,
somme serial numbers of MAS 49 and 49-56 I have met these past years:
F15569 - MAS 49 - Octobre 1951 on the stock rundel- barrel of 1951.
Bolt and rear sight replaced by spare parts of a MAS 49-56. Last assignation : BT (a Gendarmerie unit) of Carentan. Neutralized weapon.
F4975X - MAS 49 - 1955 on the barrel. Neutralized weapon.
F7774X - MAS 49 - August 1957 (stock rundel). Neutralized weapon. Like never been used.
F7776X - MAS 49 - August 1957 (stock rundel). Neutralized weapon. Like never been used.
G2713X - MAS 49-56 - P73, barrel of 1971.
H1543X - MAS 49-56 - Modified in "civilian" caliber.
It has been written in "la gazette des armes" and repeated by J. HUON that the MAS 49-56 has been produced between 1957 and 1978 for a total of 275240 units : 100 000 of the F serie, 100 000 of the G serie and 75 240 of the H serie. I have some doubts for the 100 000 units of the F serie. I have never seen a MAS 49-56 of the F serie, on any website. As you can see, somme MAS 49 were still produced in august 1947, and we know a MAS 49-56 of 1958, serial number G9282. Despite the events in Algeria, it was a time of peace. And I have doubts about a production of 100 000 MAS 49-56 in less than a year at the MAS in time of peace.
Does anyone have seen a MAS 49-56 with a serial number under F7776X?
Best regards
Alamas

Hello all, I just noticed that my original post had been stickied to the top of the page. Since I've finally got around to learning how to post pictures online (or atleast this website anyways), I thought I'd go ahead and post some pictures of my MAS. If anybody would like more pictures, or pictures of specifics parts please, by all means, just let me know and I'll do my best to get them up. I've had this rifle to the range on two separate occasions and it functioned flawlessly. I've put 40 rounds of the PrviPartizan 139 gr. FMJ through the weapon and had complete reliability and no slamfires. If I remember correctly, accuracy ran about 3 1/2" to 4 1/2" off the 100 yard bench. I plan on doing more accuracy testing with this, as well as my 36/51, in the spring when the temperature warms up some! This gun is a blast to shoot, my only compliant being the trigger pull is heavy and the front sight blade is way to wide in my opinion. Also, I'll mention that the front sight blade on my rifle has been painted red. I mention this as I didn't know if anybody else has a Syrian MAS with a red painted front sight or not. Not real sure if some Syrian soldier with bad eyes did this, or some American with bad eyes did it? Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys the pictures!

Just purchased F 4077 (as was pointed out its a number made famous by the TV series M*A*S*H*!)

Dark gray parkerizing. All numbers match. Excellent original condition. G is marked on the front of the barrel. I have not taken the handguard off to see the date. Super nice rifle - can't wait to shoot her!

My new to me 49/56, Vertical G 74725, 26336 under grenade sight on barrel, haven't seen under the handguard yet. Threaded barrel w/flash hider, parkerized (85% remaining), re-arsenaled P76 in the box. Nice looking wood not sure what it is...don't think it's beech but not sure how to tell. Tiny CAI import stamp on receiver. Packed in a box that had an old SOG packing slip...must be from SOG years ago! No accessories just 1 mag. Appears to have the front band electro penciled with H21912 and H10875. Looks to me to be a mixmaster?

As the Chinese say, do not settle for the one who says he knows, go to the one who knew first.

Besides the occasional slam fire , my MAS .308 does not horribly malfunction, and I have been to the Wolff site and did not see a catagoy for the MAS. I would like to get the recoil spring, and also ask, would it help if I lightened up the handload a spot?

Could you post a link, should/can I call them? I love this rifle, and do want to "settle" into thinkin it cannot be done right.

A long time Enfield collector, I find myself strangly drawn to the the MAS, what a rifle! Thanks ahead of time.

The MAS is a fine rifle. My personal favorite. Mine will deliver 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards all day long, as long as I do my part.(I am not as reliable as the gun unfortunatly).
Wolff springs have to be made up custom. Send them the original spring, and ask them to make one 3 links longer, and with heavier wire. This will increase the spring rate to an acceptable level.
The best test is to fire your gun wth the gas block on, single shot. See where the bullets impact the target. Then fire in semi-auto. They should go into the same group. If they impact below the group, your spring is too weak, and the brass is being ejected while the bullet is in the bore of the gun. By increasing the spring tension, the dwell time of the bolt will increase, allowing the bullet to leave the barrel, pressures to go to zero at the case, and easy extraction.
The extractor has to be altered so it holds the 308 round tight when the bolt comes to the rear. This is one of the reasons for the rim getting ripped off, as the extractor is made for a cartridge of larger diameter. It is fixed easily by filing material off the extractor where it meets the bolt.
By doing these things, and firing 168 to 190 grain bullets, you will have a rifle that is fantastically accurate, and reliable.
Do not clean with Windex. All that is is colored water with alcohol in it. Ammonia D has no ammonia in it...
I use 10 percent ammonia, from tru hardware, followed by Rem oil. Some of the new foaming cleaners have promise, but I do not use them in the MAS because I do not want foaming action in the gas tube.
Once again, lighten the firing pin by taking metal off the sides of the pin, and keep all tool marks running front to back. You will have no problems with slam fires.
Enjoy my toy.
P.S. the 308 that I made, now belongs to my son. I fire one in 7.5, and make brass from 30-06. It bulges a bit at the base, but 10 loading later, with no problems seem to indicate this is no big deal.
