When Century had the MAS 44s We saw three different finished weapons here.
Grey Park
Black Paint
Black Park......the black parkerized guns were the least common. Anyone else seen one of these???

I think the black looking park was "Stoving" a black carbon applied to the park to darken it, sometimes the varnish was worn off, so the park looked black. I have had one in the 80's......

Varnish worn off?? I have a Mint 44...nothing "worn off" and it looks like Maganeese Phosphate (black) parkerizing to me. Could just be VERY dark grey. It just is a striking different finish when you put it next to a grey Parked 44.

very intersting survey.
It would be even more intéresting to amend your data by adding the barrel manufacture date and eventual rearsenal stamps.
Will post my own when I get back home.

Per your request on the other board. I bought this around 10 years ago - I have no idea what constitutes the difference between a Syrian and a French rifle. Appears painted black. I have no idea what the device near the front of it does - range finder for gl? - best guess - barrel attachment has #26 on it. No muzzle brake.
Rifle is marked EBF horizontally and F 77530 vertically. Rear of receiver marked on left in circle "MM" on right "D". Buttstock is mismatch number - F 37499. Scope is marked APX L806 OPL No 28.503 No markings noted on mount. (Did not take it off - this rig was put together by me 10+ years ago - I found the scope/mount/carrying case first and later the rifle)
Hope this helps you.

rogerbutthead the best way to tell if it is a Syrian or French 49 is the Syrian has a bayonet and the French ones does not.BTW great rifle you got there.DMinFla

The device on the side is the aiming devise to launch grenade, moving the screw adjusts the depht of the grenade allowing to hit according to the distance that appears on the side marks.
the aiming device can take two different angles 45° and 74 ° if I remember correctly hence allowing full distance or half distance according to the selected angle.
such devices existed on M1 Garand but without depth adjustement of the rifle grenade and it was a add on device with a gas cut off.
shooting rifle grenade with a MAS was really accurate.
the device on 49/56 works with the same principle but much faster to use with its sliding depth adjustment ring and the aiming device allows for direct AT and AP/AV shooting.

Went to go talk to an acquaintance with a MAS49 to see if he would give you his info. Ended up buying the rig. I guess its Syrian, #26 on barrel attachment, F 37596 on receiver and stock - scope is APX L806 SOM No11677. He states picked up the scope/mount/booklet/eyepiece all with the case. He bought the rifle from someone else who claimed it was a VN bringback. (no paperwork of course)
The other rig I posted has a light brown leather scope/mount case.
Hope this helps.

Mas 49
# F 14970 (horizontal), barrel Mas-1953, grenade launcher, parkerized, condition new, no refurbishing stamp, stock & forend walnut.
Mas49-56
# G 21709 (vertical), barrel Mas-1971, refurbished 1971, transformed MSE 1975.
# G 50773 (vertical), barrel Mas-1966, refurbished 1970.
# H 73907 (vertical), barrel Mas-1991, (cal 7.08) no refurbishing stamp.
All three 49-56 are parkerized, and with flash hider.
logging of barrel date and refurbishing stamp can help to assess rifle past: my G21709 has a barrel dated 71 and refurb stamp 71, as G50773 has a barrel dated 66, it means that G21709 was rebarreled in 71.

MAS 49/56 with Serial # G2778 (vertical) with muzzle brake and grenade launcher. The finish is dark Park. There is a "P76" in a box next to the serial #.
What is the significance of the horizontal vs. vertical serial # and what is the # in the box?
Thanks,
GTP Super

Sometime in the early 50's, circa 1953, the MAS authorities began to stamp the number on the receiver vertically instead of horizontally. I believe that all of the 49-56 rifles were stamped vertically, unless an early 49 receiver was used to build a 49-56.

It would be very handy to update your data by adding the barrel date, to be found under the hand guard and log in as well the refurbishing stamps.

DMinFla was naughty, luring me in here from my usual haunt, the Japanese forum….
My MAS 49/56 is serial G51369 stamped vertical, has the flash hider, wide front sight base and rebuild mark “P75”. It is in un-issued condition and I have the scope for it as well, I bought that some time after I purchased the rifle. I would like to shoot it more but do not for lack of non-corrosive ammo. It fired three shot bursts (slamfires) with my handloads.
I also have a MAS36 bolt action that is a Viet-Nam bringback if anyone is interested in data from it. We often wish that our guns could actually tell us stories of where they have been, but I have always thought that this one’s stories would not be very nice.
Regards from Alaska,
Jeff

I have 3 rifles for survey.
MAS M1949, Syrian contract - SN# F37383
Grenade launcher, bayonet, stock cartouched "Juin, MA, 1953"
Externally all matching (stock, handguard, bayonet, etc), but has cover for 38954, bolt for F37181, bolt carrier for 33473.
Did they import these disassembled? Rifle is in excellent condition, and can only guess as to reason for internasl parts not matching.
MAS 49/56 - SN# G21794
Vertical SN#, type 2 flash hider
MAS 49/56 - SN# G97608
Vertical SN, type 2 flash hider
Has "P81" also on receiver - is this a rebuild marking?????
Thanks - Tom

Hey!- New to this board, but not to firearms. Presently I own one 49/56 (7.5) did own a Century .308 conversion but traded it away.
My rifle is in like new condition (rearsenaled 1992) it is very dark parked, and came with all the standard goodies, bayonet, night sight, cleaning equipment, sling, etc.
I have never had any interest in French Firearms. I bought the rifle because I knew enough about the design to know that much of what you read is false- related to Century conversions, etc. The 49/56 is the surplus auto loader deal of the decade. You cannot find anything comparable in such fine condition, and I appreciate when condition and function are both flawless- the rifle has not disappointed me in either.
The serial number is G16215 (best I can make out) It shows rearsenaled stamps for 1977 and 1992. The wood is perfect and very pleasant looking. there are no marks on the metal, and only a couple on the finish, which are very small. The slip on butt pad is marked 1962. I cleaned the gas tube very well, never had a single problem with this rifle- but I did with the Century conversion (Yes, I know).
I have cleaned it very thoroughly, to include the wood, and have shot it extensivley over the past two years. It functions wonderfully with Frontier Brass, Nosler BTip 150s over IMR 4895 (dont have my table here for gr). It's a doll to shoot, dont like the front sight but thats just how it is- and I can still hit what I'm aiming at. I had some trouble at first with soft point bullets not feeding well, hence the Btips.
I guess its just me, but so many people complain that this rifle is ugly. I rather like the looks of it to be honest.

Nice rifle Buddy, to say the least! No Century conversions needed.
A guy I run into regularly at gun shows here in Northern California claims to have a MAS 44"A". Have any of these turned up anywhere else, or any other 7.62Ns for that matter? Both must be very rare.
DM,
Here is another MAS44 for your survey:
Serial Number F5991 and it's parkerized

I would like to kick this survey to the top along with some news about the person who began it.
Dan Mayfield, known here as DMinFL died in July of a heart attack at age 43. He began the work of collecting serial numbers for MAS semi auto rifles and I feel that work ought to go on. Please keep this thread alive with your continual contributions of serial numbers. I will attempt to restart the same thread at Parallax Bill's Place.

Michael, very sorry to hear about Dan, my sympathies to his family. Heart problems seem to be prevalent around me lately.
I bought this about five years ago. The local pawn was nice enough to order from SOG for me. I have kept it in the box and all accessories are still as packed. I always felt it was too ugly to take anywhere. So I've never fired it. The bolt and all parts look as new to me. I tried to find an arsenal mark for rebuild status, but don't see anything other than the AR with an S under it on the front left of the receiver, just visible in the pics. Serial H 30537

hi,
somme serial numbers of MAS 49 and 49-56 I have met these past years:
F15569 - MAS 49 - Octobre 1951 on the stock rundel- barrel of 1951.
Bolt and rear sight replaced by spare parts of a MAS 49-56. Last assignation : BT (a Gendarmerie unit) of Carentan. Neutralized weapon.
F4975X - MAS 49 - 1955 on the barrel. Neutralized weapon.
F7774X - MAS 49 - August 1957 (stock rundel). Neutralized weapon. Like never been used.
F7776X - MAS 49 - August 1957 (stock rundel). Neutralized weapon. Like never been used.
G2713X - MAS 49-56 - P73, barrel of 1971.
H1543X - MAS 49-56 - Modified in "civilian" caliber.
It has been written in "la gazette des armes" and repeated by J. HUON that the MAS 49-56 has been produced between 1957 and 1978 for a total of 275240 units : 100 000 of the F serie, 100 000 of the G serie and 75 240 of the H serie. I have some doubts for the 100 000 units of the F serie. I have never seen a MAS 49-56 of the F serie, on any website. As you can see, somme MAS 49 were still produced in august 1947, and we know a MAS 49-56 of 1958, serial number G9282. Despite the events in Algeria, it was a time of peace. And I have doubts about a production of 100 000 MAS 49-56 in less than a year at the MAS in time of peace.
Does anyone have seen a MAS 49-56 with a serial number under F7776X?
Best regards
Alamas
