For those that have been following the progress of this new gun, the reviews are very bad. Very good advice given not to rush and purchase this one!!
My trusty 160.00 Makarov pistols!!! I love mine!!!
I would never buy anything in the first model year, too often there are birthing pains, and this one has had more than its share. I did read something VERY interesting in Gun Tests that no other site I have seen has mentioned. They said that you had to read the manual VERY carefully, and use ONLY this exact brand recommended ammunition, I believe there were two specific manufacturers that would work in it. IF you followed that manual it worked great, but if you did not, it had major issues, most of the same issues I have read complaints about. I believe that many people are not following these instructions and this may well be why there is so many problems. I have to wonder why they would make it so ammunition specific, that if it continues would be a deal breaker in the end for me. I would want a bit more ammunition choice, along with cheap surplus ammo available which is part of the draw for the 9MM Luger cartridge.
But, even if those are the majority of problems, there are still many others, if one looks, the R51 is not even found anywhere on the Remington site, I think they are hiding this one for a while until they can work out the kinks.
Oh and where are some of those $160 Maks I want a few more!!!

Actually, for the last couple of weeks now the R51 has been front and center on Remington's site with them announcing that they've got the bugs worked out. They had most certainly previously suspended advertising and sales though.
They have indeed finally started to act. I bought one early and only one major complaint, the slide was much harder to work than they advertised in their videos. Mine had over 400 rounds with only 4 or 5 issues. That said, I sent it back for a new replacement gun.
One thing about the R51, most but not all of my Makarov carry holsters will fit the R51.
It is in 9x19mm; someone posted how much the R51 resembled a 21st century type Makarov a few months ago. Advice was also given not to run out and purchase one. I was just interested in how it was developing and sure enough the current reviews were not good.
I only paid $93.00 each for my first two Baikal 9x18 Makarovs.
Of course, that was in 1993.
Neither one ever failed me. I gave one to my dad and kept the other.
If Remington gets the bugs worked out of the R51, it should be a sweet carry piece.
I just wish it was 9x18, instead of 9x19 with a short barrel.
