Experimental cartridge made by APX "Ateliers de Puteaux" to gain knowledge on small caliber size. bullet was identical to the 8mm "M" in shape and length. Case heads marked PUTEAUX and dated from 1893 to 1896.
This is from memory, for references, I will look into my books when I get back down to sunny Cote d'Azur.
There was a lot of experimental work carried out in the 1890/1910. The Mle 1886 Lebel rifle and the 8x50R cartridge were seen as short term expedient to balance the buildup of Germany weapons.
The experimental work on small caliber/high speed cartridges and the developpement of semi automatic rifles to fire them carried out by the Military Establishment was never publicized, and many archives were destroyed in 1940, informations are scarce.
