I am aware the Famas is being used with steel case ammo,is the ammo that is currently being issued for these rifles also using a steel jacket projectile?.And if so is this type of projectile causing premature wear to the barrel/rifling in these rifles?.

E.G. France is belatedly adopting the SS109/M855 62gr. cartridge, yes?

BTW: Is it the case that the FELIN standard is being done by Beretta?
Also, if you'd field another question: Any truth to the French armed forces settling on two possible replacements: Either the FN SCAR or the HK 416?

The SS 109 developped for the FN Minimi in 1980 is the NATO current standard, the French reference for it is F4 (produced from 1982 until 1999 by GIAT at Le Mans together with the F1 ammunition).

The barrel for the FELIN with a 1/7" twist are supplied by Beretta, the work to upgrade the Famas to FELIN standard with these barrels is done by NEXTER at Tulle.

The Famas will still be in use after the adoption of a new rifle, to be nominated next December from 5 contenders

- HK416 Heckler & Koch
- SCAR FNH
- ARX 160 Beretta
- SIG516 SwissArms
- VHS2 HS Produkt

There are already quite a few other rifles made by SIG, HK, FN used by French Special Forces.

The 'new' 5.56 projectile, which will supposedly become standard across most Western militaries,is a 77 grain bullet.I am told,by someone testing them down here for service use, that they have a very looping trajectory at extended ranges. And probably just too heavy for this relatively light caliber.
