Was able to pick up this original Charleville musket at auction recently, was listed as a black powder shotgun so I got it rather reasonably. It was built at the Mutzig arsenal and appears to be in decent shape. Looks to be dated 1789. Anyone know details about this particular arsenal and production of the 1777? I've found examples of 1816s, 1822s, and 1842s built at Mutzig but no 1777s other than this one. Also, any way to tell if it saw service in America in say War of 1812?
I got the musket in. It's in fine shape overall, but needs the sear fixed. It appears this is an older musket that was updated to the "corrected" standards in 1813, as it has an original date of 1789. The 1813 is stamped over it. Kind of interesting. This thing has proofs and inspection stamps all over it. The lock is full of them. Bore is excellent. I would imagine this is a Peninsular or Waterloo campaign captured piece as its in such good condition. The broken sear would be a good reason it would've been ditched in the heat of battle.
That's a real nice example ,you did well. Thanks for posting.
