Default Survey of Savage #4 serial number ranges

Thanks for the responses and as promised here is an updated list. Keep your eyes open and we can fill in more of the gaps.

With the numbers of Savage #4s turning up at shows in the US perhaps it is time to try to refine some of the serial number ranges. I know, as an author, that rifles are not completed in strict numerical order but perhaps we can narrow down the ranges. Here is what I have seen so far and picked up from another forum. All are marked US PROPERTY unless noted. Note: we have an overlap between 1943 dated and no date rifles, need more observations in the 51Cxxxx to 60Cxxxx range. Be sure that the year is not scrubbed off.

One Savage #4 MKI, serial number 17C5233, 1942 date, has turned up. It is a confirmed MKI not a MKI*. Does anyone else have a MKI with a serial number higher than 13C2752. Wonder if Savage was using up some surplus receivers held back as parts? Or?

I have added some serial number observations about Savage snipers and unfinished snipers.

    0C1 - 1941 MKI lowest # 1941 date
    0C2804 - 1941 MKI highest # 1941 date

    0C3870 - 1942 MKI lowest # 1942 date
    13C2752 - 1942 MKI highest MKI # 1942 date

    13C2845 - 1942 MKI* lowest MKI* # 1942 date
    36C1916 - 1942 MKI* highest MKI* # 1942 date

    38C2632 - 1943 lowest MKI* # 1943 date
    60C7797 - 1943 highest MKI* # 1943 date

51C7693 - no date lowest MKI* # with no date
0C63110 - no date highest MKI* # with no date

OC1 was converted to a sniper and is shown in Skennerton's book.

It appears that 3,000+ rifles were serial numbered in 1941 but according to Skennerton only 1,325 were completed (accepted?)

It appears that around 132,800 MKIs were made.

Need rifles in the following serial # ranges to further narrow the gaps.

    0C28xx to 0C38xx for 1941 - 42 changeover.

13C27xx to 13C28xx for MKI - MKI* change over. Success! We now have a gap of only 93 at the change over point!

    36C19xx to 38C26xx for 1942 - 43 changeover.

51Cxxxx to 60Cxxxx for changeover to no date.

0Cxxxxx - any serial number with 5 digits following the C ie:- 0C30228

Lend Lease legislation was passed 11 March 1941 while the first Savage(0C1?) was finished 22 July 1941 so it appears that all Savages were marked US PROPERTY. Some had US PROPERTY and other marks scrubbed when they went into service. The one millionth Savage was presented to Brig. General Guy Drewry 18 May 1944. The last Savage was produced 22 June 1944.

All Savages with 5 digits after the C were made in 1944, probably between sometime in April and end of production in June.

Savage snipers or unfinished snipers(mount bases only, no "T" stamped, may have cheekpiece.)

1941 dated rifles - 10 noted, 3 are complete snipers with "T" markings and scope numbers on stock, 6 have the bases installed, 1 is a standard rifle.

1942 dated rifles - 3 MKIs in the 0C3xxx to 0C5xxx range have the bases installed. 9 MKI*s in the 13Cxxxx to 15Cxxxx have the bases installed.

    Thanks.

My 1942 Savage No.4 MK I (not I*) is 5C80XX. Yes, it does have "U.S. Property" on it.

South African issued. WIll post pics sometime.

BTW- The first several thousand were NEVER (Not "scrubbed") marked "U.S. Property" as they were pre-lend lease. Now keeping track of that serial number range would be cool as well.

Edit- The above paragraph has now been debunked but I have kept it in order for the postings below to make sense.

EDIT- Here are two pics. All accesories are either South African made or issued, or Savage made.

In an effort to start a truly congenial and intellectual discussion on a topic I thought I would submit the following in which I partly based my earlier comments. (Please read as I actually typed it all in!):

Page 289 of Ian Skennerton's "The Lee-Enfield Story"

"British approval was required for such changes and manufacturing concessions to components because a sizeable percentage of the Long branch rifles and virtually all the Stevens-Savage rifles were to fill British orders, and were therefore subject to acceptance by the British Inspectorate. In the initial Savage production, many rifles were rejected by the British inspectors; this was not properly resolved until a Lend-Lease agreement was formulated between the British and U.S. governments.

Under the new agreement the British had less control in the initial inspection and refusal of rifles; conditions for payment were changed also which further reduced some of the controls Britain previously had. The Lend-Lease rifles are marked "U.S. Property" while those produced earlier under the direct purchase system were not so marked as they were for a direct British contract."

I wonder if some of these early rejected contract rifles were back at the factory when the agreement switched to lend lease and before they went out the door a second time they were given the "U.S. Property" marking like their latter made counterparts. Just an idea.

EDIT- Okay, because I am really bored tonight, here are three pics of my 1942 South African issued Savage No.4 MK I. Please note in the first pic the SA made sling, 1942 Savage action cover, SA bayonet and SA made frog. Also note the Belgian made grenade launcher and case that are both SA issue marked.

My Savage is #90C4189 and is US Property marked. The bolt head and bolt handle which are Savage marked are stamped with a "P" rather than a flaming bomb. The bayo lug is also "P" marked.

    arado,

I have a MkI Savage (T) less scope in the 13C S/N range and a MkI* (T) in the 16C S/N range. Has anyone ever been able to determine when the changeover to MkI*'s occured at Savage? The rest of my Savage rifles fall within the known S/N ranges and are nothing remarkable. All of them ar marked with the US Property stamp.

I tend to believe the story about the first 1000 rifles to be just that, a story... There is quite a bit of hard evidence to the contrary from surviving examples within that particular S/N block. That being said, I own an example of a SA property stamped Savage that has had the US property stamp neatly filed off and the area (or reciever)reblued. Who and why remain a mystery.

OK... more info then: 2-groove bbl, early button cocking piece (using up old parts at end of production?), has US property stamp. Flaming bombs on left receiver wall and on right bayonet lug. No date stamp - but that's pretty obvious given that it's a 1944. Stock wood is all birch and all savage marked. Magazine is serialled to the rifle and there is a small repair to the heel of the buttstock, but rifle is not FTR marked. Probably a british field repair b/c the patch is beech. No import or export marks, so this one was probably surplused from somewhere other than Britain. It's been in Canada a long time, not a recent import.

For those who don't know, after serial number 99C9999 they started over at 0C00001 <- note the 5 digits after the "C"?

I'm in..I'll go for the highest numbered Mk I. Rifle is number 13C2752(matching).With the exception of the rear sight(SM stamped) and front sight guard(^ stamped)just about every part on the rifle is S stamped, including the swivels and wood.Bands are milled, buttplate is aluminum ,it has flaming bomb proofs,2 groove barrel and a square cocker. No FTR marks, reciever looks to be parked,no black paint no export/import marks, nothing to indicate colonial service.

Great info! I will update the table shortly. I do have some specific questions for the following:

Lance - 0C907 - MKI? 1941 date? If so lowest confirmed MKI.

    ARADO - 0C4347 - 1941 or 1942 date?

SteveM - 0C9506 - MKI? No date? or does it have 5 digits after the C?
    28C9502 - MKI or MKI*?

MikeTV - 13Cxxxx -US PROPERTY marked? Would like first digit after C if OK - 13C1xxx.

    GFL775 - Stamped 1942? US PROPERTY?

    Thanks

Agreed. I think most people now acknowledge that the written references to early rifles not being US property marked is wrong. The most plausible theory I have heard is that some british units in the early days removed the marking from their rifles - as I recall there were even standing orders to do so at one point.

From Moderator: Know a retired British armourer. He told me that in his armourer shop, they removed the "U S PROPERTY" mark from thousands of Savages. Their Colonel did not like seeing it.

I think some of the confusion about being property marked or not stems from the dates of the initial contract vs. the initiation of Lend/Lease.
From what I've been able to acertain, the first contract run was indeed to be a direct purchase from the UK. However, delivery was not made and neither had payment when L/L was initiated and the contract was covered retroactive. Therefore, the initial contract run in production and still on US shores was US Property marked so Savage could receive payment from the US government.
It took a while for that initial contract to be signed BTW, since Savage was actually the third US arms manufacturer to be approached. That was only after Remington and High Standard were both forced to decline.
Too bad the original Savage records are lost or we wouldn't need to dig so deeply.

Leftboot, I have photo's of 0C17 and it is indeed marked. Afterall, I'm the one who posted them to the other board.

    Cheers,

    JB

The Lend Lease bill was passed 11 March, 1941 and the first Savage MKI (0C1?) was finished 22 July, 1941. It would appear all Savages were Lend Lease and marked US PROPERTY. Many had the US PROPERTY scrubbed in service. The one millionth Savage was presented to Brig. General Guy Drewry 18 May, 1944. The last Savage was produced 22 June 1944.

I have number 0C3780, a 1942 MK1 with six groove barrel. Unfinished sniper rifle, with U.S. Property stamp. Had scope pads and cheekpiece mounted, but no scope. Also not stamped with the "T". Unfortunatly bubba got to this rifle before me. Wood has been chopped, sanded and two extra holes have been added to the receiver for a peep sight.Restoration is under way though to at least make the rifle presentable.

I have Savage No4Mk1 ser# 70c59xx all Savage all matching. The serial number has a letter "B" stamped under it on the socket of the reciever. It is stamped U.S. property. 2 groove barrel flaming bomb stamped. It also has BLR stamped on the top of the wrist, 172 over FR stamped on right side of the butt stock. The wood appears to be birch. The bayonet lug is stamped with a "P" and the muzzle is marked with British proofs, ie: measured in tons. I do not know the date of manufacture of this rifle. The rifle has no import markings as it was purchased prior to GCA '68. The rifle was bought at a large surplus shop in Atlanta Ga in 1966 or 67 for the pricey sum of $17.00 (I have the reciept from when it was bought). I forgot to mention the rifle is in mint condition at least 95% with perfect bore.

0C63110 Mk.1* U.S. PROPERTY no date, two groove, Mk.3 rear sight
These are not from the recent batches imported. 7C came from a pawnshop in N.C. over three years ago, 0C came from Springfield Sporters 2&1/2 years ago. 0C is a higher number than I have seen documented in books. EDINOH.

My Savage is a No 4 MkI* and it is US Property marked. All the parts are Savage except the magazine housing which is M/47C marked. Since that part doesnt match and the gun is like new Im assuming it was rebuilt at some point.

The serial is 72C7320. No date.

    - 95C87XX
    - No ejector screw
    -U. S. Property marked
-FTR'd but not marked as such......
    - all small parts and bolt are Longbranch (32C97XX), as is the front sight and buttplate

    - and last but not least...a really sweet trigger (pull).

My latest - 53C5892 - undated, USP marked, New Zealand marked, 100% matching, 100% Savage.

This should narrow the no date serial better - getting close to Pnep's rifle at 53C2268 - that's 3624 difference - maybe 2 months?

    Crunching a few numbers here---Stevens/Savage made 1,030,228* rifles from 22nd July 1941 through 22nd June 1944.
Subtracting the 1,325 rifles completed in 1941, we have 1,028,903 rifles made in 30 months, for a monthly total of 34,296.76.
Daily average production would be 1143.22 rifles, so the "...3624 difference..." is about three days production. That's narrowed down a bit more, isn't it?

I too have held a Chinese Savage - even held it long enough to strip it for parts, keep the barrel (now in the USA), pull the wood (got all of that still), photograph the Chinese ideographs on the receiver, and then the big horrible metal cutting wheel came a-slicing through the action!

Part of the action was still attached to the barrel when it arrived in the USA. The other half is now in a local rubbish tip somewhere no doubt.

the metal on the rifle truly was in appaling condition (pitted EXTENSIVELY), yet the barrel was reasonable enough to save. The wood rates average (covered in dings, dents, dangs, and dongs), with a ROTTEN rear handguard (the handguard ring rusted THROUGH the lip on the rear of the handguard!) I kept the triggerguard, most small parts, and the rear sight. Front sight protector was covered in flaking rust!

It was NO LOSS to the world, so don't lament a sordidly horrid condition rifle being destroyed.

Just bought a 4Mk1* today to sit in the corner with my Finn Mosin - serial no. OC24161, no date anywhere on the rifle. Two groove barrel. U.S. Property marked. No importer stamps. Flip-up wartime rear sight. Two weird markings on top of the receiver, overlapping, that almost look like a crowsfoot inside a circle.

Now to get a decent Mauser and complete the trifecta.

(and then maybe an 03A3, and then an Arisaka, and then a Garand, and then a MAS... better start buying lottery tickets)

    I have two Savages:

One is undated: s/n 78C4600 Not "FTRd" All marked parts except safety lever are Savage, including magazine follower. The safety lever is LB.
The serial numbers on the bolt and butt socket match.

The other is dated 1942 s/n 11C8116. It has been "FTRd" with micrometer rear sight marked B over CR over 670 and all the metal is painted black except the front face of the rear sight. It has U.S. "flaming bombs" stamped on the butt socket below the serial number and on the breach end of the barrel. There is an upside down 5 pointed star with a W in the middle stamped on the top of the receiver above the breach. The bolt, butt socket and lower for-end have matching serial numbers.

Both of these rifles are U.S. Property marked.

I bought this rifle at a pawn shop straight out of the cosmoline-- the rifle had probably only been used to drill cause the wood was banged up

My friend and I bought one apeice for $89 with a spike bayonet. If I had know I would have gotten half the crate. It shoot sweet at 500 yards off iron sights

I bought it in 1992 and it is all original Savage. My friend used his to take down a Bear in Canada with my handloads. I took the wood off to refinish and put another Savage stock on in the meantime (in better condition)until I find time to refinish the original stock.

    Hi, All,
My Savage "replacement" from S.O.G., is numbered "60C8516" on both bolt and receiver, and is stamped "US Property", has a 2 groove barrel, and no date on the butt socket. The original one I received from S.O.G. was in better shape, (#51C295413"), but didn't have a matching bolt, was a 4 groove barrel, and very poor accuracy after adjusting "all the usual suspects", was the reason for return. It was stamped 1943. (It's POI on the target at 100 yds. was 8"right, with the front sightas far to the right as it could go. Hopefully it's replacement will do better! Both rifles had the 300/600 flip rear sight.
    Cheers,
    Fred (Honcho)

    Hello All,
I now have a Savage No 4 MkI* that is US Property marked with the flaming bomb. The ser. no. 64c1177 with no date. All other parts are Savage marked except the magazine which has had the outer flat edge ground (for what ever reason I do not know).

I did have another Savage No 4 MkI* US Property in layaway which was no. 69c6909 with no date. For the serial number record.

    Thanks.

I note your very worthy effort in collecting serial numbers/other markings for the Savage No. 4 Mk I/I*. Since I am in the process of cataloguing and disposing of a large portion of my collection, I should be delighted to share the data on the 100+ Savages I currently have if you are interested.

    Thanks.

    Sapper41,
As I mentioned in my email - 7C8579 is out of sequence for a 1941 dated rifle. It falls in the early 1942 range and is about half way through the MKI production. I have noted one other out of sequence rifle - a MKI in the MKI* range. Many guesses as to why but no hard facts. There was a war on, rifles were needed and Savage was paid only for completed rifles. It would be foolish to scrap a receiver that failed inspection if it could be repaired.

Hi all. My No 4 Mk 1* is 24 C 9058. Marked US Property 1942. Directly above the date and below the S/N is what looks to be an angular "S". This research and data sharing is very helpful for a new collector, and the site is great.

    Austin,

I have 73C3394 with Greek Civil War markings - crudely stamped on the receiver ring is a triangle over EK/SEOS. Rifle looks like it was dragged through the mountains with no finish. Has all Savage marked parts except the bolt. I have tried to find out what unit used the markings but with no luck. What are your markngs?

OK, it does'nt really matter much! but I have 72c6673 ( assumed 1943) that is already listed in this survey, and it does not have any EK/SEOS markings.. but it does have the stacking stud (not swivel) thats been found on many of these newer imports that are assumed to be from Greese or Turkey.. I purchased it months before this recent influx of new No.4s... I'm just trying to update 72c6673's condition to date!! had I realized it's signifcance for your survey... I would have mentioned it sooner.. I suppose it's a (Greek) pre-infux import, HTH, Jason

This rifle is one of the "in-the-box" unissued Savages discovered in an estate in British Columbia. Yes, I degreased it of 60+ years of Cosmoline. The serial is visible in the pic.

8C0594 Mk1 US marked 1942. Non matching bolt and mag. Pretty rough. Rusty bore. Butt cut square for a recoil pad but no pad. CAI marked. I've had it since the mid 80's. I want to do a 223 conversion on it.

Looks like ours were made about a day apart. Mine is 73C05XX - No4MkI*, undated. S and US Property marked receiver but the butt socket is stamped with the L/B Long Branch mark, in additon to the serial. Lots of Savage parts and a CCM front handguard to boot.

    Great thread!

I recently obtained MK 4 No. 1 with serial no. 56C4586 with a B below the serial no on the band between he stock halves. Hardly a nick on the rifle. Bore is bright and shiney. Has S on butt of stock for being the short model. I hope this helps with your survey.

    An observation here.
    51C7693 lowest no date
    60C7797 highest with date 1943
As it would be near impossible for one man to do all the serial numbering they must have alicated blocks of numbers to each person to ensure no duplication of numbers, so this would mean different cut offs times in S/n ranges for different changes.
These 4 S/N from a range of about 5000 would seem to support this.
    56C2718 no date
    56C6069 43 date
    56C6133 no date(my rifle)
    56C7398 43 date
    I may well be wrong.

    I have a newly acquired Savage No4Mk1*(T).
Date on band is 1942, below an S.
It has 'England' and US PROPERTY on receiver. Scope pads, and cheek rest. 5 groove barrel, which I am told by previous owner has a PH marked barrel.
There are no T marks like S51, or TR or T etc. I have seen other Savage T's exactly like mine, without the sniper markings in wood or receiver. Does anyone have any solid reference that my gun is definitely a Half (T), rather than me saying "Oh i know someone with gun just like it, he calls it a T too".
The gun has never been FTR'd and is absolutely mint and deadly accurate at 400 yards.
Serial is 13C74XX. No import marks. Mint condition. Action smooth. Bore is probably the best out of my 7 enfields. I will catalogue all markings later this week. If anyone would like the pics, email me. bounty@camelsquadron.com

Oops, I forgot to mention that the cocking piece is the early oval type, and the sights are the kind where you twist the little wheel, with numbers only up to half way and a piece of the sight has been filed down. (Sorry, I dont know my sights yet). I'll have pics of that later this week too.

camelpilot: nice find, we now have 10 #4 MKI* fitted with scope pads. I just picked up my own MKI* fitted with scope pads. Serial number is 15C5798. I had watched this rifle for a few months and decided to get it. It was grungy with old oil and hardened cosmoline in the corners as well as a stock that needed BLO and small dent removal. Took it apart and the buttstock has the 5798 stamped on the ledge insided the socket along with S51 on the knuckle. The serial number is penciled in both handguards. The forearm is not serial numbered but has a wood inlay where the barrel joins the receiver. The wood looks like it has not been off the rifle in a while. Bore is excellent and all the metal is S marked except for the magazine. Bolt serial number matches receiver. Will have pictures later.

These are two of my favorites:

Mk.I (T) dated 1942, serial 0C3376 , S51 marked, but no TR or T markings. All Savage components, including the Mk I rear sight. Super nice condition.

Mk I* dated 1943 on the receiver, serial 49C0945. Probably never left the US.

    S No. 4 Mk1 U.S. Property with no date, 85C73**, if I had to guess a date I would say 1943 or 44

My Savage No.4 Mark 1* is from the recent batch that Big 5 is selling. It has serial number 38C4273 and is stamped 1942. This number appears to be a bit higher than the previously reported high 1942 number. In reading through the posts on this thread I noticed several with 1943 serial numbers that were lower than mine. It seems that Savage may not have been assembling strictly in sequencial order. There was a war going on after all. This rifle, a Turkish import from what I've read, is in very clean shape, good bore, what appears to be a birch stock with only minor dings. It even came with a correct, but unmarked khaki British sling and a Savage bayonet.

    Regards,
    Mike

My all matching MK1* #59C0398 has no date. It evidently came from Turkey as there was a 50 Lira (series 1952) paper note crammed in the butt-stock screw hole!

    Just bought serial number 72C6126.

It doesn't have any year though it does have a "B" under the serial number. Nothing else worth noting other than the US PROPERTY stamp.

    Savage No.4 Mk I*:

    60C2561
    73C4885

    No dates

All matching #'s & all Savage marked parts.

I purchased 60C2561 from SOG last year. It appears to be unissued or saw very little handling.

I bought 73C4885 from a private party 'bout 2 years ago. Issued, but not abused.

Greetings from the Central Coast of California, it's been a number of months since I've posted and wanted to get some feedback from you Lee Enfield experts. Am a Garand, Carbine and K98 collector but just picked up my first LE No. 4 Savage built, US Property marked rifle. Big 5 had it on sale for $159 here in Hollister and the wood and metal are both in very good condition.

Would appreciate anyone being able to tell me something about Serial # 71C0739.

    Cheers,

[red]Since above posting have purchased Charles R. Stratton's book on the No. 4 and No. 5 rifles. 71C0739 is all matching Savage parts, black walnut stock, 1943 mfg. year, Savage marked bayonet. Can someone comment on the letter B under the serial number. Would also be interested in knowing where these rifles came from (Turkey?)as there are no markings indicating anything other than the Savage markings.

It's unclear as to what the "B" mark found under the serial number on some of these Savage rifles is. It may be a British acceptance mark.

Big 5. No4MkI* 57C32xx with faint flaming bomb and B under SN, no date. US property marked, all matching Savage marked, including the bayonet which is marked No4MkII.....does that make sense?

Also, it has an odd thin leather sling with loops sewn with thick thread.

    Hello everyone! New guy here.
I have "US PROPERTY" No4MK1* in center left side of recvr, then 32C8510 over 1942, over "S", over flaming bomb, over very light "IAC ALEX" On left side recvr wrist (Can't see the "VA") On top of recvr is big "U" with arrow inside pointing toward muzzle. All matching except mag which has on back side "40C9752" lined out, then under that is "29C4140" then on the retaining ridge is stamped block "S" twice, one 90 deg. to the other, all over "8 over 8" or the "88" might be "s over B"
Stock is walnut butt and forestock is birch? or maple? Definitely different grain. Merry Christmas everyone!!
    Thanks for the site!

Spotted another No4MkI to No4MkI* changeover discontinuity while poking around on JoeSalter.com: he has a No4MkI* with SN 12C7223 (item #5795 on his "military longarms" page) which is a fair bit lower than both the lowest No4MkI* and highest no4MkI reported here. Also dated "1942"; on the left side of the butt socket below the serial rather than on the receiver sidewall. This would seem to support the theory that there is no single pair of serial numbers for the changeover.

    http://photos.joesalter.com/5795/5795-17.jpg

I would suspect that production of the No4MkI receiver would have continued for some period of time after production started on the No4MkI* just to keep a steady supply of receivers on hand while any production kinks were being worked out on the new design. Or just a quantity of un-serialled receivers stockpiled before the changeover in case of delays, and then fed into the production line as needed?

Another changeover question might be worth asking: when did the changeover(s) to the 2-groove barrel occur? I have a 1942-dated No4MkI in the 10Cxxxx range that has the 6-groove barrel, but it would appear that there are some (eg, Youngblood's 8C2616) with 2-groove barrels. Barrels replaced during FTR, or just another overlap in production/assembly?

The five point star might be the Indonesian import mark, would make sense with the cresent as well since that country in a Muslim nation.

I hope someone can give me some information on my rifle. I recently bought a Savage Enfield serial# 72c2986 with a B stamped under it. It is U.S Property marked with no date. what I could gather from the forum is this a 1943 the stock only has what looks like a star stamped right behind the bolt. On the left side of the reciever it has a flaming bomb then S No4 Mk1* NO cresent moon under S. It is all matching. The only problem with it is the butt stock is loose and needs to be tightned. If you can give me any information it would help me alot.

    Savage No4 Mk1*:
    S/N Receiver 65C8157 ("B" under S/N)
    S/N Bolt 61C7958
    No date
    All Savage marked parts
    Flaming bomb marked
    Import marked (Century)

Excellent condition, some patina, mirror bore, very nice stock.

Leather sling appears to be cobbled together from a couple of belts, some stitching, and wire, like a Turk only worse.

    Bought from Century last summer.

In addition to the previous post, I checked my records for another four Savages that came with a lot of five purchased last summer.

Although I no longer have them, here are the other Savage No4 Mk1* serial numbers from a lot of five I got from Century:

    56C5943
    60C5269
    71C7964
    86C0677

One was in outstanding condition, two excellent, and one very good. They either had no sling or cobbled-together pieces of leather. All had flaming bombs, but one of them had an area of pitting over the bomb as if there may have been a crued attempt to gouge it (the rest of the receiver was in pretty good shape, "US Property" mark easily visible).

The new owners have reported satisfaction in all cases.

Just purchased Savage 66C73xx from SOG. There is a B below the serial number. A Christmass present to myself. Matching Ser. No's on bolt and receiver. #1 bolt head. 2 grove barrel. Flip type rear sight. Magazine was not marked. Overall good conditon, finish is pretty worn and stock has some dings, but mechanically very sound. Had to replace the extractor spring, the one in it was weak and did not even look right. Probably a field repair gone bad. Also, the front sling swivel was replaced, the sling part kept sliding out of the swivel part. Cleaned up pretty good, but took quite a lot of grease (the elbow kind) to clean the barrel. Nice and shinny now. Hope to get to the range after my next trip.

One savage No 4 Mk 1dated 1941. Matching bolt and receiver bolt marked OC2357 with a partial P stamped sideway after the number. The receiver marked england at the top fron of the receiver. The angled area on the left side of the receiver is marked US Property. The area on the receiver where the rear stock is attached is OC2357T. The receiver appaers to have been drilled for the sniper pads but they are missing. Someone mounted a william sight on it. Also the barrel had been sporterized (AKA) cut. Do not know if this one is for real, but I will at least restore it to a MK4 no 1

Just picked up a nice looking No4 MkI* today. Serial 42C6181 S 1943 B Was a Savage, marked US Property. I'm assuming the B is a British inspection mark?

As an aside, it looks like Century Arms just released a bunch of un-issued Kar98's. I looked at one for $499. Was 1943, all matching, never fired, and had original Nazi stamps.

Hello I have one run of the mill Savage No.4 MkI* "Lend-Lease" Rifle. "US Property" marked 1942 built.

    Rifle Number: 15C7512

Bought for $100 at Turpin Guns in Anchorage, Alaska in the Autum of 2000. Had been "sporterized", now restored to what it should have looked like in 1942, with the exception of holes tapped for telescopic sights. Original butt stock (which I still have) was marked with Canadian Broad Arrow. Somewhere along the line it had the Mk.3 rear sight installed.
From what I have seen at shows here in the Lower 48 (Ohio) it seems the Savage made rifles are fairly common. I hope to grab an English built No.4 Mk.I sometime in the future.
Why do some of the rifle numbers listed here have X's in their numbers, I don't think I have ever seen one marked that way before.

46C5487 Hand selected by myself at Springfield Sporters in 1996 or 1997. Appears to be totally Savage marked and correct, dated 1943. Has been FTR'd but all I see that has been altered are the markings; from No.4 MKI* to No.4 MKI.

What will all this information be used for? I just wondered because there is alot of serial #'s here. Mine is a Savage Enfield No4 Mk1* serial# 72c2986 with a B stamped under it. It is U.S Property marked with no date. what I could gather from the forum this is a 1943. John

    Hi Guys,

I'd just like to add my No4's details, in a post on page two of this thread by pneps "Quote
    OK, here goes:

13C2582 MkI 1942 date US Property ground off.
    14C4286 MkI*T 1942 date US Prop marked
38C5351 MkI* 1943 date US Prop marked
53C2268 Mk1/3 1943 date US Prop marked 7.62 NATO tgt rifle
61C3926 MkI* No date US Prop marked.

We need to get this thing stickied! unquote"

In his post pneps show a rifle dated 1943 53C2268 (note dated)
I have rifle 53C2272 (4 rifles later) and it has no date of manufacture evident anywhere.

its savage marked everywhere as it should be, with matching numbers across the board. it was issued to the New Zealand army and carries a second set of matching serial numbers as well as the NZ defence arrow marks.

the odity is it has a Mk1 sight and not the Mk2 battle sight. the sight appears to be a long branch sight but its missing the L portion of the LB stamp. is it pssible that the rifle came out of the factory with a Mk1 sight? it just seems very strange that such a nice clean matching example would be messed about in the sight department only. or maybe the NZ army preferred accurracy over simplicity?

anyway just thought it might help close the gap between change over from dated to undate 1943 modles.

    regards Rob.

if I could work out how to attach a picture I would. heres a link to another thread were I have posted shots.

    Default Savage serial survey

I don't know how I missed this thread, but things have been confusing lately. I have a no import mark 1942 two groove No4Mk1* 17C5650, FR on butt, matching bolt with the round cocking piece. It came with an old US sling.

I am the proud new owner of Savage #22C3269

    1942
    No 4 Mk I*

Vital stats for those interested is that is a complete Savage, now I am not sure if someone took the time to accomplish this before I got it or if is original from the factory, all I know is everything that should be marked is marked, and it is marked with the Block S...oh and all the numbers match too.

Attached is the pic of the numbers and such, I did not manage to get much chalk in the 9...sorry, I am too lazy to redo the pics.

According to what i have read on this threat my Savage could be late ´43 or early ´44. (probably ´44) The number is 84C82xx.
It is a No4 Mk1* two grove barrel and Us property marked. Mismatching bolt, all wood S maked.

Mine is 60C6557. There is the mysterious B under the serial number. It does have a 1943 date stamped onto it. So what conclusions do we draw about the date stamps that seem to come and go during production?
