I was talking to some guys preparing for Camp Perry Nationals Sefvice Rifle competition and the subject of barrel twists came up. The comment made was that most 1:8 barrels today are really 1: 7.7 barrel twist.

so, is this correct ?

Krieger offers a 1: 7.7 while match upper shops like White Oak offer 1: 7 and 1:8 routinely.

1: 8 is 1: 8 or is it 1.7.7 ?

sorry, no reputable bbl maker would intentionally
market a bbl that was off by that much.

twist are sometimes not "exactly" as listed, but
to lie to the customer kills your reputation.
bullet selection is based on twist, lie about the twist,
and the gun does not perform.

8 provides a very large window of bullet selection
for the 223. you can shoot a single loaded long 80
for long range(600 plus) and shoot 52/53 very well at
shorter ranges 100 and out.
