Danish mystery rifle
I believe this is the Danish Rekylkarabin M. 1896. Can anyone please give me some information on this rifle?

This is the source of the photo, if you didn't know.

Follow Dutchmans link to "Töjhusmuseet", click on "Håndkort 1" (handcard one). If I read right it tells: Caliber 8 mm, weight 4,7 kg, barrel-lenght 617 mm, total lenght 1179 mm. Named "Madsens 8 mm Rekylkarabin m.1896"? Magasine 150x80 mm and weight 0,11 kg.

It was adopted by the Danish Coast Guard in, I believe 1897 and was the very first selfloading rifle to be taken into service by an military/police organization.

Thank you for the replies.
Yes, I stumbled upon that website last night. It seems to have a wealth of information ( I do wish I could speak Danish). And not only about Danish guns. Check out the "Find et vaben" section and use the drop-down menu.

Rekylkarabin M.1896
The M.1896 Rekylkarabin is the follower to the Madsen and Rasmussen "Forsøgsrekylgevær" from 1887-1888. They had been working on an automatic rifle since 1883, but not until january 1887 the system was able to fire 100 rounds automaticly without any stops. The trial-rifle was in the race for the contract for the new danish militaryrifle that ended up with the Krag-Jørgensen M.1889.
On www.arma-dania.dk you can find pictures of the "Forsøgsrekylgevær" M.1888 and the
Rekylkarabin M.1896
Even though the "Forsøgsrekylgevær" didn't win the contract, it was decided to go on with the trials and in 1888 they were tested by 2 bataillions (50 rifles). The conclusion was, that it was not good for use in the infantery, but it could proberly be used in a fortress.
In 1896 a modernised version (Rekylkarabin M.1896) were produced (50 pieces) for the Middelgrund-fortress. The karabin was shorter and lighter than the "forsøgsrekylgevær" and it had a regular magasin instead of the "flip-loader".
A few years later (1903) Madsen and Rasmussen came with another modernised version, the famous Madsen-machinegun. The technical construction of the Madsen-machine gun is the same as in both the Forsøgsrekylgevær and the Rekylkarabin.
The Rekylkarabin M.1896 was not only inspiration, it was the direct forefather to the Machinegun and all of them were developed by Madsen and Rasmussen (Bjarnov).
