1924 MK V No. A39xx, 100% correct. I know of another in town which I think is 1922 the safety on that one is a from a MK III, otherwise it's uncut and original.

Here's yet another Mk.V survivor, plucked from a rack of run-of-the-mill, $99.00 number ones at an unsuspecting gun shop.
It's missing the original bolt and safety, but is otherwise unmolested.

Folks
just a quickie;
sorry I can't add any knowledge to surviving Mk5s but as a matter of interest I borrowed a book from the local library called "Requiem" "By The Photographers Who Died In Vietnam And Indochina". It published the last roll of film taken by photgraphers of all nationalites with the known facts of their deaths. On p107 there is a photo captioned 'Viet Cong guerillas fire at passing aircraft. Their weapons date back to the French Indochina War.' It is attributed to Nguyen Luong Nam, 1966.
There are 3 VC standing in a trench shooting up. The first is using an SMLE Mk5 with its distinctive extra band at the rear of the nose cap. How you would you be! A very clear, detailed photo. Outside of Skennerton's book I have never seen an action photo. The other rifles are a Moisin Nagant carbine (I think) and an M1A1 .30 cal. carbine with the folding stock visible.

Gunshop find. Sporterized wood, all metal remaining intact except nosecap and upperbands.
No. 4973 Matching bolt, barrel and reciever. Proper Mk V safety.
Blueing about 95%. Frosty bore, but not to bad. Should shoot OK.
Restoration parts on the way, will post before and after pictures in a week or so.

Have interesting Mk.V Reworked stock msrked DP complete and in nice shape. the handguard is made of two pieces of wood nicely glued together and matches the fore end. Dated 1924 and has england stamped on top flat of knox form, also nitro proof marks. Bolt is numbered 55 and receiver and barrel are numbered 66. Numerous inspection marks. Most original blue finish remain, smooth action and nice bore. Shoots well. has original rear sight which has not been messed with. Got this gun in a local garage sale years ago. I collect Enfields didn't know anything about this model until I bought this one and did a little research. Joe Turner

Nope. Not a MK V.
Is your rifle a .22 or in .303? The markings indicate a III/III* that was converted to IV* and that is a .22 trainer.
As for MK V's? Mine is sportered but has original rear sight and MK V safety and matching bolt. Serial for the 1924 gal is "A 240X"

Tim, I don't know if anyone mentioned it but the overstamp on yours is the pressure test marking for export.

It is refreshing to see those who say it cannot be done being passed by those doing it.

There was what I believe was a hacked up Mk V at a local gun show this past weekend. The rear sight caught my eye right off the bat. Forend was hacked short but the metal looked untouched, It had the nmagazine cut-off. Asking price was $130. I was hot to trot on another rifle and was unsure whether the correct replacement parts could ever be found so I didn't even make an offer on it. Been kicking myself a bit ever since.

Having given it a closer look it is an overstamp of 225 over 2265 the original number. This is born out by the furniture having the 2265 stamp as well. There are proof marks and other wierd stamps that I have yet to wade through. So far the nosecap is a replacement from when? the top hand guards are replacements but I am having those remade. The reaer sight aperture is a replacement on the original leaf and the safety catch is a MK111. At least it shoots well. I will have another look and attempt to decipher the proof stampings.

I'm pleased to report that MK V Serial number 6522 dated 1923 and in original configuration is now residing with me. Been looking for a decent one for about 25 years or so.
As I said its all original except that it has an import mark identifying it as a No 1 Mk III. Oh well thats a small price to pay for a nice rifle.
I'm not sure about the safety so I've included a picture of the one installed on it now. It is marked with a V and has four or possibly five lines stamped on the forward outside of it.
Cheers,
Bob

Here's my Mk5. Its complete and all matching. I thought it was a 1922, but its in the serial number range as several others made in 1924. Guess I will have to look again when I have time.

By the way, I was with Machinego when he purchased his. I thought I got a fantastic deal, but he really stole his! They thought it was some cheap MkIII refurb. That's ok, Machinego will remember my sweet deal that day!

1924 MK V No. A39xx, 100% correct. I know of another in town which I think is 1922 the safety on that one is a from a MK III, otherwise it's uncut and original.

Just bought one 1922 complete and matching two days ago. Waiting ten days before I can get it so I don't know the number exactly - it is four digits though I think.

Here's yet another Mk.V survivor, plucked from a rack of run-of-the-mill, $99.00 number ones at an unsuspecting gun shop.
It's missing the original bolt and safety, but is otherwise unmolested.

SURE DO!!!!!!
It has to be the rarest of any SMLE V.
then again, I guess it is even the rarest No5 as well! Since it is a hybrid of sorts....

Folks
just a quickie;
sorry I can't add any knowledge to surviving Mk5s but as a matter of interest I borrowed a book from the local library called "Requiem" "By The Photographers Who Died In Vietnam And Indochina".

1922 Mk V
Gunshop find. Sporterized wood, all metal remaining intact except nosecap and upperbands.
No. 4973 Matching bolt, barrel and reciever. Proper Mk V safety.
Blueing about 95%. Frosty bore, but not to bad. Should shoot OK.
Restoration parts on the way, will post before and after pictures in a week or so.

One of my favourite rifles all use shooting rifles is an SMLE that's marked as such:
ENFIELD 1915
Sht. IV
IV*
Is this the same as a V?

Chuck

Cheers,
Bob
