I know there's little genetic connection, but I see Alfonso has the same vacant stare of the last Spanish Hapsburgs, Felipe and Carlos.

The family tree shows that Wilhelm and George were first cousins, George and Nicholas were also first cousins and Wilhelm and Nicholas were third cousins. Wilhelm’s mother was the sister of George’s father; George’s mother and Nicholas’ mother were sisters from the Danish royal family.

All three men were also fifth cousins, being equal descendants of King George II of England, the most recent British monarch born outside Great Britain and the last British monarch to personally lead an army in battle, the Battle of Dettingen during the War of the Austrian Succession in 1743.

Therefore WW1 was some kind of a family war, which makes even more unbelievable that it broke out, as this war was far from inevitable. Everyone involved got drawn into battle because everyone accepted the narrative of inevitability.

Another factor is that the Entente powers were under a lot of pressure. There was the final corner to what became known as the Triple Entente, the Anglo-Russian convention of 31 August 1907, but in the summer of 1914 the British played with the idea of letting expire this convention the following year and replacing it with a kind of understanding with Berlin. The reason was that the British were much less concerned by German naval armaments than is always claimed.

it was clear that the German Reich had lost the arms race on the seas. Instead the British were watching the Russian, American and Japanese fleets all the more closely.

Despite of this at the end England stuck to the alliance with France and Russia because the British wanted to kill two birds with one stone: soothe Russia and limit Germany's strenght. England did not want Europe to be the prey of a single power. But it also did not want to stand alone if the Entente would win against Germany and then Russia would assert its geostrategic interests in Asia even more aggressively.

Sir Arthur Nicolson, a major diplomat, who for instance had signed the Anglo-Russian convention, put it this way: "We have to fight the Germans, to make sure we don't have to fight the Russians."

With the same logic, the German General Staff said “we have to beat the Russians now so that we won't be beaten by them in three years”. The reason for that was a special trauma in Germany since the Thirty Years' War that was renewed in every generation: the feeling of being vulnerable to foreign invaders due to the location of the German Reich in the middle of Europe.

The main enemy for Germany was France, the “Erbfeind” of Germany (French–German enmity), shouting for “Revanche” and planning to regain the provinces Alsace and Lorraine, lost 1871.

(Georg Leo von Caprivi de Caprera de Montecuccoli), successor to Bismarck as Chancellor saw no point in an alliance that might contribute to a Russian war of aggression against the main ally Austria-Hungary. To be added to this was the fact that the German public increasingly recognized Russia as an opponent, just as conversely the Russian public positioned itself against Berlin and its partner Austria-Hungary. Therefore, ill-advised by von Holstein and von Caprivi Kaiser Wilhelm allowed the Reinsurance Treaty with Russia to lapse in 1890.

Trying to recall the caption for the cartoon published in Punch with Bismark leaving the ship of state - something to the effect 'there goes the pilot".
Had he remained it is conceivable the Great War would not have occurred.

What I found interesting, almost surreal, were the personal notes between the Czar and Kaiser in the time leading up to the war. Their letters would be almost casual in tone, sounding as much as kids on a playground warning each other than heads of state in deadly earnest. And at the end, they signed familiar: Nicky and Willie. Literally, the Czar of Russia would threaten his cousin with war if certain actions occurred, but then sign the letter "Nicky" and then the Kaiser would respond with equal threats, signing "Willie." Within five years, one would be dead and one deposed.

As to the small rifles for the Czar, I actually got to see Tula's smallest, a set that was less than a foot long, fully functional with ammo made to fire in it. It would make the round smaller than the Kolibri by far, but the fact was it was a one-off, made to prove the metallic prowess of Tula's craftsmen! But they were fascinating to look at.

You are right with the caption, staffy. In German it was "Der Lotse geht von Bord".
WW1 would have happened at least later if the pilot would have stayed on board, but Bismarck was quite old already and not liked by the younger generation in Germany.

For a study of European royalty in the run up to the Great War and the relationships between the King, Kaiser and Tsar read "King, Kaiser, Tsar"by Catrine Clay, Walker & Company, N.Y., ISBN - 10:0-8027-1623-7.

That left two politically isolated countries in Europe, France and Russia, which soon found each other.

A preliminary agreement to consult in case of aggression against either of them was found during a visit by the French Northern squadron to Kronstadt 11 July to 5 August 1891.

The Russo-French agreement was concluded in August 1891 in the form of an exchange of letters between the ministers of foreign affairs and strengthened by a military convention in August 1892, the Franco-Russian alliance, a military convention, signed by the representatives of the Russian and French general staffs on 17 August 1892 (5 August 1892 in Russian calendar), which provided for mutual military aid in the event of a German attack.

Few people know that Nicholas 2 was still in his youth, before he became king repeatedly visited Japan.

During one of the visits, Nicholas 2 even made a tattoo in his memory of Japan.
Tattoo with a dragon on the forearm of the right hand. There are a little less than ten photos where you can see this tattoo))
This was long before the Russo-Japanese War of 1905.

These pictures are taken while playing tennis. The shirt sleeve is raised for convenience during the game.

Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsesarevich of Russia (later Emperor Nicholas II of Russia) had a little more than a tattoo, when he came back from Japan: a 9 cm scar at his forehead.

There was the Ōtsu incident, a failed assassination attempt on him on 11 May [O.S. 29 April] 1891, during his visit to Japan as part of his eastern journey. Nicholas was returning to Kyoto after a day trip to Lake Biwa in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture. He was attacked by Tsuda Sanzō, Samurai and one of his escorting policemen, who swung at the Tsesarevich's face with a sabre. The quick action of Nicholas's cousin, Prince George of Greece and Denmark, who parried the second blow with his cane, saved his life. Tsuda then attempted to flee, but two rickshaw drivers in Nicholas's entourage chased him down and pulled him to the ground. Nicholas was left with a 9 centimeter long scar on the right side of his forehead, but his wound was not life-threatening. Tsuda Sanzo was convicted for attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

On 6 May the two rickshaws were invited to the Russian frigate. Nicholas personally awarded them with the orders of St. Anna, in addition, each of them received a lump sum of $ 1,500, and they were assigned a pension of $ 500 a year.

That was a nice earner, set them up for life. A fair recognition and reward.

By an exchange of letters between 27 December 1893 (15 December 1893), and 4 January 1894 (23 December 1893), both governments announced their ratification of the military convention. This was the most aggressive alliance on the European continent. It only existed to wage war against a third power as common enemy: the German Reich.

Great photos that you found. I am particularly interested in the Onion Dome Arch. Do you have anything else on it?

Unfortunately no, nwellons, I just have a photo of a different arch in La Villette/Paris, built for Admiral Avellan from straw, hay and alfalfa hoods.
